James R Fahy : British Writer

Early writings[edit]

Fahy wrote from an early age, his first memorable story being a vampire tale named Nasus at the age of six or seven. 'I’ve always written, as far back as I can remember, (though I hope I’ve gotten better at it over time). My first story was about a vampire called Nasus, whose entire family had odd names, which spelt out mundane human names when pronounced backwards' [1]

He has been cited as explaining that his fantasy series Changeling, had its roots in earlier versions he wrote around the age of fifteen. Unhappy at school Fahy states that he didn’t know a lot of like-minds at the time and spent an awful lot of time inside his own head. In a way he considered that the seeds of Changeling were a form of wish-fulfillment, as here was someone in a similar situation, living a very dull and normal life, who is suddenly whisked away to a whole new world, where things have more meaning, and where he has some form of validation and begins to build real friendships. Fahy admits this may have been a form of unconscious escape for him at the time.[1]

Following School, Fahy 'found his feet' in college and met a group of creative and artistic people, who he believes set him on the right path to being a self-assured writer. "I don’t think I was ever really myself until I got to college. All dark times end, eventually, if you can ride out the storm".[1]

Writing Inspirations[edit]

Fahy drew great inspiration for his fantasy 'Changeling' series from the works of Alan Garner and his book the Weirdstone of Brisingamen. Garner's sense of wonder and the notion that fantasy books and real life locations could overlap is something that has always stuck with him, and he wanted to try and recapture that feeling in his own work. Many loctions used in the Changeling Series are real places in Britain.[2]

Current Life and Representation[edit]

Fahy is represented by literary agent Peter Buckman of the Ampersand Literary Agency in Oxford. Both of his book series are currently published by Venture Press, an Imprint of Endeavour Press in London. Together with his Wife and daughter He lives in the North of England close to wild moors and a haunted wind farm, although he states that his heart often lies somewhere between Oxford and Florence.[3]

The Changeling Series[edit]

The Changeling series is a seven book fantasy series aimed at a middle-grade age audience, but which has received positive feedback and interest from adult readers alike. Following the adventures of Robin Fellows. a seemingly ordinary twelve-year-old boy who's life is turned upside down following the sudden death of his only known relative, his grandmother, the series charts Robins development as he is taken to stay at Erlking Hall, a mysterious place of many secrets, where he learns much about his past, and his true nature. Robin is not human, but born of the race of Fae, and was smuggled to the human world as a baby to avoid the bloody conclusion of a great civil war in his own homeland, the Netherworlde. Throughout the series, Robin must come to terms with his past, learn more about the shadowy parallel world which lies alongside th human world, and strive to master the seven elemental towers of magic in order to reunite the broken source of all power and to end the war once and for all. Each of the books in the Changeling Series are based around a different element. Book one: Isle of Winds, is tied to Air. Book Two, Drowned Tomb, is liknked to water and ice. The order of elements for further books has not yet been revealed.[4]

The Phoebe Harkness Books[edit]

The Phoebe Harkness books are an adult series of Paranormal fantasy, set in the city of Oxford in the near future following a world-changing apocalypse. The stories follow the adventures of Dr Phoebe Harkness, a 'para-toxicologist' working at a top-secret government laboratory, and he dealings with the many shadowy characters of the city of New Oxford. In Fahy's dystopian world, Humans live alongside other races 'Tribals' 'Vampires' and 'Bonewalkers' in an uneasy peace. Book one 'Hell's Teeth' follow Dr Harkness on the trail of a serial Killer who is stalking the snowy streets of New Oxford, and her development as an inter-species ambassador between the world of humans and the 'Genetic Others' who share the walled city. It largely revolves around the vampire population and inter-species tensions. Book Two 'Crescent Moon' is due for release in late 2016 and is believed to focus more strongly on the 'tribals' [5]
