Early Life
Prior to starting his professional career, James Gutierrez received his Bachelor's Degree in Economics in 1999. He then went on to receive an MBA in General Management in 2005 from Stanford University's Graduate School of Business.[1]
Career
James Gutierrez founded and was CEO of Oportun (formerly Progreso Financiero)[2], the leading provider of responsible, unsecured loans to Hispanics in the US that recently surpassed $1.5 billion in loans and over half a million borrowers since its founding. He served as CEO from 2005-2012. James led Oportun from its roots as a fledgling startup to a market leader in the lending industry. Throughout this time, he raised over $250 million of debt and equity to fund Oportun's ongoing expansion. Under Gutierrez's leadership, the company scaled its loan originations to over 200,000 per year with revenues of $65 million. Oportun operates 85 retail stores throughout Texas and California. The company employs roughly 600 employees.
James Gutierrez has served on the Federal Reserve Board’s Consumer Advisory Council, as well as the Centennial Advisory Committee. [3] With years of experience as a thought leader in the realm of finance, he is a frequent speaker at industry conferences. Dedicated to championing the financial successes of traditionally marginalized individuals and groups, James Gutierrez co-authored two federal and state laws to help increase the availability of safe and affordable small dollar loans that were passed.
In 2010, BusinessWeek selected Gutierrez on their list of "America’s most promising social entrepreneurs." In 2012, Goldman Sachs named Gutierrez as one of America’s "top 100 most intriguing entrepreneurs."
James Gutierrez founded Insikt as a Founding Partner in June of 2012.[4] The company is a $5 million venture fund, highlighting seed and Series A investments in the realm of FinTech (Finance Technology). Invested companies include OnDeck Capital (IPO), Blends Labs, and Zimbio. Other investments include ThatGameCompany (maker of Sky), Listo!, Aura, Wyre, and Talent. Gutierrez was also an early investor in many leading technology companies including Trulia, OkCupid, StubHub, and Symphony Commerce.
Professional And Personal Organizations
In his personal time, James Gutierrez champions business development and leadership opportunities through involvement on various leadership boards. These include the SEO San Francisco Advisory Board, where Gutierrez served since 2011. This organization provides after-school educational opportunities for children in the public school system within New York and San Francisco. Since 2010, Gutierrez has also served on the board of Association for Enterprise Opportunity (AEO). This is the largest trade association for micro-business lenders. Between 2010 and 2012, Gutierrez acted as Co-Chair of the Silicon Valley Leadership Group, a group that focused on the needs of Silicon Valley's startup community.[5]
