James Hurst is an American author who is famously known for writing The Scarlet Ibis. He was born in 1922 and grew up on a farm in Jacksonville, North Carolina. He attended high school at Booker T. Washington High School located in Atlanta, Georgia[1] . After high school, he went to North Carolina State College to study chemical engineering.[1][2] During World War II, he served in the United States Army.[1][2] His life led him to the arts, as his ambition became to become an opera singer. He studied at the Juilliard School of Music in New York, and later went to study music in Italy. Only after three years did Hurst return to the United States from Italy and abandoned his musical career. He then worked as a banker at the Chase Manhattan Bank in New York for 34 years until 1984.[1] During that time, he wrote the short story The Scarlet Ibis, and first published it in The Atlantic Monthly in July of 1960.[1] The story won the Atlantic First Award that same year in the fiction category. The story has become very popular for students to read in high schools across the U.S.[2]
