James J. Spence, Jr.

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

James J. Spence, Jr. is an autograph authenticator and author.[1] After inheriting the hobby of collecting memorabilia from his grandfather and father, he became a dealer of signed items in the 1980s, and started his business as a third-party authenticator in the late 1980s.[2] Spence, known also as 'Jimmy,'[2] has been called 'one of the most respected sports autograph experts in this country.'[3] His original authentication business, operated out of his home in Pennsylvania,[2] was acquired by Collector's Universe in 2000[3]. Collector's Universe is publicly-traded on NASDAQ[2] and includes PSA (Professional Sports Authenticator), of which Spence became the lead authenticator after the sale of his business.[2] Spence introduced a technology which enabled him to study signatures, specifically on baseballs, that were difficult to view with the naked eye.[2] When an autograph was decided to be authentic, Spence implemented a marking on the item that could only be viewed under fluorescent light. Spence viewed this authentication marking as the item's 'DNA,' prompting the company to change its name to PSA/DNA.[2] [4] James J. Spence, Jr. now owns James Spence Authentication, LLC in Parsippany, NJ.[5]

James J. Spence, Jr. was referenced as an expert in the sports memorabilia business in 'Busted!: the inside story of the world of sports memorabilia, O.J. Simpson, and the Vegas arrests' by Thomas J. Riccio.[6] He is also co-author of his own book, 'Team Baseballs: Artifacts of the Game.'[1] In 'The Garage Sale Millionaire' by Aaron LaPedis, the author advises readers to not purchase any signed collectible unless it is authenticated by James Spence.[7] In Dr. Jeffrey Brown's 'The Competitive Edge,' the psychiatrist uses James Spence as a model for integrity and authenticity in business.[8]

Spence also appeared in the reality TV show 'All Star Dealers', in which he played himself, which ran on The Discovery Channel.[9][10]
