James Kronstad

James Warren Kronstad (born March 8, 1957) is a microbiologist at the University of British Columbia.[1]. He is a Professor in the Michael Smith Laboratories and the Dept. of Microbiology & Immunology, and he served as Director of the Michael Smith Laboratories from 2008 to 2017 [2][3]. Dr. Kronstad is a Burroughs Wellcome Fund Scholar in Molecular Pathogenic mycology [4][5], the Power Corporation Fellow of the CIFAR program: Fungal Kingdom, Threats & Opportunities [4], and a fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology [4] and the American Association for the Advancement of Science [4]

Education

Kronstad received his Bachelor of Science degree from Oregon State University (1979), followed by his M.Sc. (1982) and Ph.D. (1984) degrees from the University of Washington.[4]

Career and Research

Dr. Kronstad was recruited to the University of British Columbia by the Nobel laureate Dr. Michael Smith 8 in 1989, after completing postdoctoral positions at ZymoGenetics, Inc. (Seattle, WA, U.S.A.) (Wiki), and the University of Wisconsin–Madison (Madison, Wi, U.S.A). His postdoctoral work focused on fungal mating systems including characterization of the pheromone response in Saccharomyces cerevisiae.[6], and cloning the b mating locus of Ustilago maydis [7]. Kronstad’s current research program focuses on understanding mechanisms of nutrient sensing and acquisition that support the pathogenesis of fungi that cause diseases on plants or animals [8]. One theme of his research investigates the impact that pathogenic fungi have on food security by threatening the production of cereal crops. For example, the Kronstad group discovered that exposure of the plant pathogen Ustilago maydis to combinations of carbon sources in culture triggered the expression of phenotypes normally observed only during biotrophic development in host plants [9]. A second theme of Kronstad’s research focuses on fungi such as Cryptococcus neoformans that cause meningitis in immunocompromised people (e.g., HIV/AIDS patients). A long-term effort has revealed the regulatory and acquisition functions that enable fungi to compete for iron during proliferation in animal host [10]. Other studies have characterized the impact of glutathione on the virulence of C. neoformans to highlight the importance of redox homeostasis and metabolic compensation in adaptation to the mammalian host environment [11]. The core funding for Kronstad’s research comes from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (https://www.nserc-crsng.gc.ca/), the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (https://www.cihr-irsc.gc.ca/e/193.html), and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (https://www.niaid.nih.gov/) [4]
