Scholarship

In the American Political Science Review, 2011, Kung and Shuo Chen[1] analyzed the causes of China's Great Famine and concluded that it was due in part to career concerns of senior Communist Party officials. Provincial level officials seeking promotion enforced Party policy more zealously and caused more suffering. However, Yang et al.[2] reviewed the research and concluded that the data included many errors, inaccuracies and inconsistencies. Moreover, they could not replicate the main empirical results.
