Attorney James L. Walker, Jr. is a managing partner of Walker and Associates, LLP, an entertainment law firm in Atlanta, Georgia.[1] He holds a law degree from Howard University and a Master’s of Divinity from Yale University.[1] Walker has served as an adjunct professor teaching entertainment law at the University of Connecticut School of Law, and he has also taught at Boston College School of Law and the University of Hartford’s Hartt School of Music.[1] His clients have included artists such as Rick James, Jamie Foxx, Donald Lawrence, Shirley Caesar, DMX, and Hezekiah Walker.[2]
In 2010, he published This Business of Urban Music, a reference book aimed at the business of urban and gospel music[3]
Sony BMG Music Entertainment lawsuit
In 2005, Walker and Associates law firm brought suit against Verity Records, Provident Distribution, Zomba (now owned by Sony), and Max Siegal, alleging that they tortiously interfered with contractual relationships that the law firm had with dozens of artists.[4] According to the lawsuit, Sony representatives then instructed those artists not to deal with Walker and his firm or face the chance of not working on future projects at the label.[5] The lawsuit specifically alleged that a number of artists were explicitly told not to hire Walker for large publishing and copyright deals.[6] In 2013, Sony BMG Music Entertainment settled the lawsuit.[7]
