James Mallon
James Mallon (born Sept. 16, 1969) is a Canadian Catholic priest, author, and speaker. He is the pastor of Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada. He is best known for his work in the area of parish renewal in the Catholic Church and for his books on the topic, including Divine Renovation: Bringing Your Parish from Maintenance to Mission. Mallon is also the founder of Divine Renovation Ministry.[1]
Mallon was born Sept. 16, 1969, to Ronald and Belinda Mallon in Glasgow, Scotland, and is the oldest of four children. In 1982, at the age of 13, his family moved to Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.
He studied Biochemistry at Dalhousie University for two years in Halifax before entering the Seminary of Christ the King in Mission, BC where he completed a B.A. in Philosophy. Afterwards, Mallon studied Theology at St. Augustine's Seminary[2] and the Toronto School of Theology. In 1997, he received his Master of Divinity from St. Augustine's and his Bachelor of Sacred Theology from St. Paul University in Ottawa.
On May 16, 1997, Mallon was ordained to the priesthood for the Archdiocese of Halifax by Archbishop Austin Burke, at St. Mary's Cathedral Basilica.
For the first three years of his priesthood, Mallon served as assistant priest at St. Mary's Cathedral Basilica, while also serving as the Archdiocesan Master of Ceremonies.
Then from 2000 until 2004, Mallon served as Vocations Director for the Archdiocese of Halifax while also serving as administrator then pastor in two other parishes: St. Paul's in Herring Cove and St. Peter's in Ketch Harbour.
In 2004, Mallon was appointed pastor of St. Thomas Aquinas Parish in Halifax, and the following year was also appointed pastor of the neighbouring Canadian Martyrs Parish. During this time, he founded the John Paul II Media Institute where he produced and directed several faith-based video productions.
Three years later, after leading a process of amalgamation, Mallon was named pastor of St. Thomas Aquinas-Canadian Martyrs Parish.
In August of 2010, Mallon was appointed pastor of Saint Benedict Parish in Halifax. He served as pastor of Saint Benedict until June of 2017.
In the summer of 2017, Mallon was appointed as Episcopal Vicar for Parish Renewal and Leadership Support for the Archdiocese of Halifax-Yarmouth. He assisted in the restructuring of the Archdiocese. As well, half of his time was dedicated to the Divine Renovation Ministry.
In August 2020, Mallon returned to parish ministry where he presently serves as pastor of Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.
John Paul II Media Institute
In 2005, Mallon founded the John Paul II Media Institute: a registered charitable organization that produced faith-based media.
During this time, Mallon produced and directed several video productions, including:
- Catholicism 201 (2006), a follow-up to Alpha that went on to be run in 24 countries
- Dogmatic Theology (2011), an eight-week video course on discipleship that aired in EWTN and Salt and Light Television[3]
- In the Beginning: Evidence of God from Physics (2012), a four-week video series featuring Fr. Robert Spitzer, SJ
- The Mi’kmaq Nation: A Story of Survival (2012)
- Cedars, Strong and Free: Halifax's Lebanese Community (2013)
- Cross Training (2014), a 13-week television series on EWTN
- Grandparents (2015), an 11-week television series on EWTN affirming the unique and necessary vocation of grandparents[4]
Divine Renovation
While serving as pastor of Saint Benedict Parish, Mallon wrote Divine Renovation: Bringing Your Parish from Maintenance to Mission[5]. Born out of his experience in parish ministry, he observed that the only way the Church can reverse a decline, not just of membership but also of faith, is for parishes to embrace the Church's missionary identity — to heed the call of Jesus to make disciples of all nations, and to make evangelization the top-priority[6]. In his book, Mallon's aim was to build on the Church's rich theology by providing a model for how any parish can live this out — a model that Saint Benedict Parish was following[7].
The message of Divine Renovation resonated with the hearts of priests and Catholic leaders from around the world. Following the book's publication in 2014, Mallon and his team received inquiries from parishes in different countries asking for advice, visits, and consultations — so much so they thought the only reasonable way to respond to all the inquiries was to organize a conference where people could experience first-hand how this model was working at Saint Benedict.
In June of 2016, the first Divine Renovation conference was held at Saint Benedict Parish. The conference was attended by over 600 parish leaders from around the world, including regions as far as Europe and Australia.
Since then, Divine Renovation has become a full-fledged global Catholic ministry. Headquartered in Canada, Divine Renovation has offices in the United States, the UK, Australasia, and German-speaking Europe. Today, Mallon continues to write books and is a sought-after speaker and lecturer on the areas of mission, evangelization, and parish renewal. He is a frequent speaker at Divine Renovation conferences and events around the world[8], including the Netherlands[9][10], Australia[11][12], and Germany[13].
Mallon also sits in the board of Renewal Ministries[14] and Alpha International[15]
