James Menzel-Joseph (20 March 1932, Toledo, Ohio- 16 January 2019, Phoenix, Arizona) was a painter, sculptor, and teacher. Menzel-Joseph's family background includes both Adolph Menzel, Germany’s most prolific artist of the nineteenth century, and Henry Fantin-Latour, the French symbolist painter .[1]

Early career[edit]

Joseph first received critical notice at the age of 15 for a mural he painted about life in Toledo, Ohio."[2]

In 1953, he enrolled at the American Academy of Art in Chicago, where he studied under William H. Mosby, who himself had studied at the Belgium Royal Academy in Brussels and the Superior Institute in Antwerp. from contemporaries of Monet, Degas, Zorn, and Sargent.[3] Menzel-Joseph graduated from the American Academy of Art, and then furthered his studies at The Art Institute of Chicago and The Art Student’s League of New York.[1]

Career[edit]

Menzel-Joseph worked as an advertising illustrator, artist and teacher, for over 30 years in New York City, Chicago, Ojai and Toledo.

"I've always loved beauty. I've always loved creation and watching things unfold as you create.. the exploration process.. It's what's going to happen if I do this. How will this look if I do this. There's this constant inquiry and fascination with what's possible."[4]

While working in advertising, Menzel-Joseph returned to The American Academy of Artto join the faculty. During this time, he produced 30 paintings of Black History in America, which were exhibited in many cities throughout the United States.[1]

Menzel-Joseph taught classes and workshops at The Ojai Center for the Arts, as a member of the Ojai Studio Artists in Ojai, CA., The Art Student's League of New York, The Hyter Group in Toledo, OH, and the Sedona Art Center in Sedona AZ.
