James Mewburn (c.1680–1731) was an English steward and yeoman. He was the steward and clerk of works in charge during the re-construction of Seaton Delaval Hall. Acting as agent for first Admiral George and then Captain Francis Blake Delaval. Some of Mewburn's surviving letters and accounts are the reason more is known about the buildings of Seaton Delaval Hall.[1] He was the progenitor of the Mewburn gentry family of Acomb.

Lookout Farm

Lookout farm, located in Seaton Sluice, was the property of Mewburn who was also a farmer. The house was built in 1720 to house him.[1]

Family

James Mewburn married Jane Armstrong, daughter of Simon Armstrong of Acomb House. Acomb House would go on to serve as the seat of the Mewburn family, influential local landowners whose holdings included much of the land facing The Green in the village, and remained in this line of the family for 280 years.[2] The property is shown as a mansion on Armstrong's map of 1769 and acted as a visual and functional focal point in Acomb's layout during the 18th and 19th centuries, anchoring a complex of farm buildings and workers' housing.[3][2][4]

His descendants include Captain Simon William Richmond Mewburn, his father, banker William Richmond Mewburn, William’s brother Mewburn Ellis founder John Clayton Mewburn and their cousin, cricketer George Richmond Mewburn. And sculptor T. Mewburn Crook.[4]
