James M. A. Turner

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

James M(ichael) A(ndrew) Turner FMedSci FRS is a British geneticist who works as a Principal Group Leader at the Francis Crick Institute in London.

Education

Turner was educated on the MB PhD programme at University College London, receiving his PhD from the MRC National Institute for Medical Research.

Research and Career

After practicing briefly as a physician, Turner returned to the MRC National Institute for Medical Research, where he was a postdoc and then Group Leader. He later moved to the Francis Crick Institute, where he is a Principal Group Leader.[1] His research interests focus on the genetics, epigenetics and evolution of sex chromosomes in eutherians and marsupials. His lab has identified how X and Y genes control fertility[2][3] and designed proof-of-principle methods to reverse infertility caused by sex chromosome aneuploidy.[4] He has also championed the use of the opossum in research, making major discoveries on the evolution of X-chromosome inactivation and embryo development.[5][6][7] Furthermore, his team generated the first system to single-sex mouse litters.[8] This approach could help reduce production and culling of animals of the unrequired sex in research and agriculture, e.g., the egg laying industry.

Awards and honors

Turner was elected a member of the European Molecular Biology Organisation (EMBO) in 2019, a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences (FMedSci) in 2021, and a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS) in 2023.[9]
