James Michael Donovan (born September 25, 1963) is an American entrepreneur, investor, and an authority on global economics.[1][2] He is the co-founder, president, and Chief Executive Officer of ADEC Innovations, an impact investing company.[3][4]

James Donovan co-founded ADEC Group that includes FirstCarbon Solutions, which provides environmental and data management solutions for industry and government clients.[5] Donovan also founded the Global CEO Alliance (GCEOA), a non-profit organization wherein he also serves as chairman.[6][7]

He is also the Honorary Consul of Samoa to the Philippines.[8]

Business career[edit]

James Donovan started his career as an investment banker, being employed by a number of firms throughout the late 1980s and 90s. He served as Vice President for the Lehman Brothers Investment Bank in Hong Kong and London from 1989 to 1991, and Daiwa Securities in Hong Kong from 1993 to 1996. He was also the Managing Director of Sui-Yeh Asia from 1991 to 1993.[9]

In 1996, Donovan collaborated a World Bank project in Manila with Carol Esguerra. After which, Donovan and Esguerra co-founded ADEC Solutions Corporation, which would be the first of the ADEC Group of Companies.[10] ADEC Solutions, which was soon renamed ADEC Innovations, is one of the first key players in the outsourcing industry in the Philippines.[11]

As CEO, James Donovan steered the company's focus towards sustainability services in 2008, when they launched FirstCarbon Solutions, an energy management, sustainability, and supply chain solutions provider. It has since gone on to partner with CDP global disclosure systems to tackle climate change through things like wastewater monitoring and supply chain disclosures.[12][13][14]

He also founded the Global CEO Alliance (GCEOA), a multi-stakeholder partnership of chief executives, governments, and individuals working collectively to secure investments that will move the global economy toward adoption of the United Nations’ (UN) Sustainable Development Goals.[15] He has established partnerships with organizations such as Pharma KPO and the Asian Institute of Management (AIM).[16][17][18]

In 2015, Donovan got into a partnership with the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE).[19] Under this partnership, the hosting of the International Specialist Centre of Excellence for PPP in Health was transferred from the Department of Health (DoH) to the ADEC Innovations Foundation, of which Donovan is chairman.[20][21] The Specialist Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) Centre on Health was created in 2012 by former UN Undersecretary-General and UNECE Executive Secretary Sven Alkalaj, and former DoH Secretary Enrique Ona.[22]

In recognition of his portfolio of business and philanthropic enterprises around the world, the government of Samoa has named Donovan as head of the consular office in the Philippines, which was established in 2018.[23] He has previously expressed his commitment to making significant investments in the field of information and communications technology (ICT) in Samoa.[24]

As a noted personality in the field of BPO in the Philippines, Donovan served two terms as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Healthcare Information Management Association of the Philippines (HIMAP).[25]

Donovan was tapped for a number of projects for the UN for his experience in business process management, sustainability and public-private partnerships.[26][27][28][29][30] He was a team leader for the United Nations Environment Programme’s (UNEP) Global Environment Outlook 6 Data Fabric Task Force.[31] He also served as a board member for the Business Advisory Board of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe’s (UNECE) International PPP Center of Excellence (ICoE).[32]

He was invited as speaker in conferences, including the UN Environment Assembly and The Responsible Business Forum on Sustainable Development in 2017.[33][34]

Donovan is the co-chair of the American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) of the Philippines’ Environment and Urban Development Committee.[35][36]

Donovan also ventured into BPO services in Kenya. His company’s investment was regarded as a boost in the country’s efforts of becoming a BPO and sustainability center.[37][38]

ADEC Group’s top leaders, including Donovan and Esguerra, won the KPMG Executive Leadership Team of the Year award in the 2013 Asia CEO Awards.[39][40][41][42]

In 2014, Donovan won the United Nations South-South and Triangle Cooperation Visionary Award.[43][44][45]

He also received the Expatriate Executive of the Year Award during the Asia CEO Awards in 2016.[46][47][48]

His company, ADEC Innovations, was likewise awarded with several recognitions, including the Most Innovative Company of the Year at the 2011 ICT International Awards.[49][50]
