James Moyle was a Canadian farmer, politician, clerk, criminal, and treasurer of the town of Scarborough.[1] He was a member of "Old Councillors" of Scarborough, and worked as township clerk in the same township from 1856 to 1865.
In April of 1865, James was convicted of "embezzlement of the funds of the Township of Scarboro".[2] His case was overseen by Judge C. J. Richards. Richards demanded the jury convict Moyle, and that if they didn't they would not fulfill their duty. The jury sided with Richards, and Moyle was ultimately found guilty of his charges.
He was the father-in-law of John Malcolm, and the brother-in-law of Edward William Thomson.
Life
Early life
James Moyle was born in 1801 in Ireland. His parents' identities are not known. Sometime later, he moved to Scarborough.
Old Councillors
The Old Councillors was a local government group in the area of Scarboro. There is not a lot of information about it outside of William Brigg's book "The Township of Scarboro" and other trivial mentions. However, it is known that there were six members:

- Peter Secor
- John Crawford
- John Torrance
- William Clark
- James Moyle
Moyle served as the head of the Old Councillors from 1856 to 1865, and was succeeded by John Crawford.
Death
The exact date of death for Moyle is unknown. He was last seen in the 1871 Canada Census, along with his wife, Elizabeth. This means Moyle died between 1871 and 1881, when the next census was held. If the years are averaged out, we get the year 1876.
