James Murphy is an Irish entrepreneur and philanthropist, born in Galway, Ireland. In January 2017, he sold Viviscal, a haircare brand owned by Lifes2good, to Church & Dwight for €150 million. The proceeds from this transaction contributed to his status as one of the wealthiest self-made business figures in western Ireland.

Career

Murphy began his career with Coopers & Lybrand (now PricewaterhouseCoopers) in Brussels, subsequently working in Belgium and Luxembourg before returning to Ireland in 1991. He later joined BMR-Slendertone. In 1997, Murphy founded Lifes2good, a health and beauty product company. He introduced a marketing approach that combined direct-to-consumer sales and distribution through pharmacy chains and health stores.

Murphy led the acquisition of Viviscal in 2007, overseeing its subsequent growth before its sale in 2017.

Berkeley Life, established in 2016, is a Lifes2good brand focusing on nitric oxide support supplements.

Philanthropy

Following the Viviscal sale, Murphy and his wife Maria established the Lifes2good Foundation in 2017. The foundation supports health, education, and community development initiatives in Ireland and internationally. As of 2025, the foundation has donated more than €10 million.

Recognition

Murphy received the Alumni Award for Business and Commerce from the University of Galway for achievements in business and philanthropy.
