James Osyf

James Osyf is an American national security professional and Navy veteran. As of July 2025, he is a candidate to represent Virginia's second Congressional district in Congress.[1]

Early life

Osyf is originally from Vernon, Connecticut.[2] Osyf is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy.[3] He also holds an MA from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government.[2]

Career

Naval service

Osyf served on the USS Norfolk.[3] He described himself as part of the "Silent Service" as an enlisted gay servicemember while the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy was in effect.[4] He deployed twice to the Persian Gulf.[5][6]

After leaving active duty he continued to serve as a reserve officer, serving as a Submarine Warfare Officer.[7][2]

Private sector

In 2021, Osyf was named Interim Vice President of Out in National Security (ONS).[8] As of 2025, Osyf works for Lockheed Martin.[4]

Political activity

In July 2025, Osyf announced he would challenge Rep. Jen Kiggans in Virginia's second Congressional district.[4]

Personal life

Osyf lives in Virginia Beach, VA.[9] He is openly gay.[6]
