James S. Wolf

Dr. James S Wolf Sr. (March 1, 1935 – August 6, 2007) was a Kidney transplantation pioneer, academic organ transplant surgeon, and President (1990–91) and co-founder of United Network for Organ Sharing. He was an Associate Dean of Medical Education at Northwestern University Medical School.

Education and career[edit]

Wolf received his undergraduate degree from Grinnell College in 1957 and medical degree from the University of Illinois in 1961. He then completed a surgical residency at the Medical College of Virginia under Dave Hume and joined the staff as a professor until 1976. He joined Northwestern University Medical School until 1994, when he became the Director of Medical Affairs at UNOS until his retirement in 2000.[1][2]

United Network for Organ Sharing[edit]

Wolf was a co-founder of the United Network for Organ Sharing. He served as Treasurer from 1987 to 1988, President from 1990 to 1991, and Director of Medical Affairs from 1994 to 2000. In 2001, he received a heart transplant through the network at the Texas Heart Institute. He proudly noted that despite his involvement with the network, they followed the standard allocation process.
