Jan Dolan (artist)
Jan Dolan (born January 12, 1939, in Peterborough, NH) is an American Impressionist painter, of the Boston School. The Boston School of painting combines impressionist light and color with a conventional foundation of drawing, composition, and brush technique. The originators of the movement included Edmund Tarbell, Frank Benson, William Paxton, Joseph Decamp, Philip Hale and R.H. Ives Gammell. Dolan studied at the University of New Hampshire, and was mentored in the tradition of the French Academy and American Impressionism in the studio of Boston and New Hampshire painter, Sidney F. Willis, student of Robert Douglas Hunter, himself a student of R.H. Ives Gammell and William Paxton. Dolan has traveled and painted extensively throughout the United States as well as Mexico, the UK, Europe, India, Bali, Thailand, and Singapore. She has taught painting and portraiture at Franklin Pierce University and the Sharon Arts Center, Peterborough, NH, and has led numerous private classes for groups and individuals.
Professional affiliations[edit]
Dolan is the only Peterborough native to receive a fellowship to the MacDowell Colony, Peterborough, NH. She also received fellowships from the Virginia Center for Creative Arts, Amherst, VA; and the Künstlerhaus Schloss Wiepersdorf, Brandenburg, Germany. She was an elected member of the Copley Society, Boston, MA an associate member of Allied Artists of America, and a member of the National Society of Women in the Arts, Washington DC.
Personal life[edit]
Janice Mae Dolan was born and raised in Peterborough by parents William and Edna Dolan. She attended the University of NH and the Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School in Boston, MA, before committing to her fine arts career. In 1959 she married James Wozmak; the couple had three children, Michael, David, and Lisa, before separating in 1971. Dolan remarried in 1981, to Franklin Pierce University professor and writer Edgar Taylor Morris II, remaining together until his passing in 2017. She currently resides in Ridgefield, CT.
Advaita Vedanta[edit]
Dolan enjoyed a close friendship with Swami Dayananda Saraswati, joining him at Arsha Vidya Gurukulam in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India, for studies and the sitting for his portrait. While in India she also painted a mural at temple in Mumbai, Ganeshpuri, and works of the Hindu Goddess Saraswati for the spiritual leader Chidvilasanada. Her portrait of Swami Dayananda hangs in the meditation temple of Arsha Vidya Gurukulam, Saylorsburg, PA, where she studied Advaita Vedanta for many years.
The Walks in Europe
Jan's international travels include helping to lead several trips in Franklin Pierce University's Walk in Europe program, created by her husband Taylor. Sketches and small works from this era often appear as background elements in other portrait and still-life works.
The groups walked across the countrysides, mapping the routes and setting up camp at new locations daily. These treks brought her to England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, Spain, France, Monaco, Italy, Yugoslavia (areas now Slovenia, Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina), Austria, and Switzerland.
Throughout her international travels, Jan sought out both the renowned museums and the small local galleries, immersing herself in the culture and art of the people she met. Elements of these various styles can be seen to evolve within her work over time, as she expanded her expression while holding true to her foundation.
Exhibitions and awards[edit]
Another of Dolan's large works, an impressionist marsh landscape, graces the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services, Concord, NH.
Dolan's paintings hang in private collections nationally and internationally, and have exhibited in museums and galleries in New York, Boston, Nantucket, New Orleans, Guadalajara, Fisher's Island, Bristol, RI, Taos, NM, Naples, FL, and many more.
She has won awards at the Catherine Lorillard-Wolfe Exhibition, National Arts Club New York; Best in Show at The Guild of Boston Artists; Bellas Artes in Guadlajara, Mexico; and the Ruth & James Ewing Arts Award, Keene, NH.
Her work has been featured in magazines including The Artists’ Magazine and Southwest Art.
