Jan Edlman (19th August 1977) is a czech painter and sculptor, born in Litomyšl, living in Prague.

Life[edit]

Jan is influenced by the history and culture of his hometown and his family background, he began to express himself artistically as a preschooler, then mainly in music. A hundred-year-old piano placed in his childhood room developed a sense of harmony and melody and apparently started a talent for art.

He studied the 3rd Grammar School in Litomyšl, then Gymnasium of Alois Jirásek, also there. After finishing secondary education he left for Prague and studied Law at Charles University. After finishing school, he started working in marketing, which he considers to be an overlap between art and business, and the projects in which he participated were always characterized by high quality audiovisuals. He was lucky with both clients and colleagues and collected many awards for his career here.

However, his creative soul always asked for more. He was already programming as a schoolboy – he was attracted by the path of simplifying complex processes down to the basic minimum, which led him to the innovation environment in ŠKODA AUTO DigiLab, where he is in charge of smart city projects and the development of sustainable mobility, including electromobility and its arrival. His entire home is based on the concept of a smart home with many automation processes that he invents and programs himself.

But he was always drawn to art itself - since 2014 he studied drawing and sculpture in his spare time, when several unmistakable works were created. Since 2022, he has been engaged in oil painting, where he multiplied his efforts after the unexpected death of his beloved father, who had a fundamental influence on the development of his soul and understanding of the meaning of life and the universe. A large part of the work is therefore devoted to the close relationship they had together.

Style and Works[edit]

Artistic development[edit]

He stidied in several ateliers, first sculpture under the lead of Magdalena Bohuslava Poplawská. Several figurative sculptures come from this time. Afterwards he moved to oil painting under the lead of several AVU lectors. This experience lead to fully focusing on oil painting.

The main driver for his creations is the fight between harmony and chaos, the search for balance between them. The fascination with cosmic processes, which are the culmination of this battle, is reflected in his works. Elements of spirituality, culture, social peace, politics, as a sign of reason and humanity, he incorporates into his paintings and sculptures alongside religious, natural and cosmic motifs - these speak to the viewer and shake his moral and ethical dogmas, ideas about a just and harmonious arrangement of chaos. The presentation of several worlds, their mutual influence and the key to finding harmony - all this is presented to the viewer on a wide range of individual canvases.

The earliest works contain various styles, from abstraction to figurative and geometric motifs (mainly lines, circles and polygons).

From the middle of 2023, he created a unique style based on strictly geometric shapes, especially with parts of a circle, which are subsequently used in the depiction of figurative motifs (for example, the oil paintings Sitting Girl; Ginger Dancer, Girl with an Apple). These paintings are especially valued for their originality and new thought in visual arts. The author himself calls this style geometric figurative deconstructivism. In addition to this style, he also works with abstractions, mostly on smaller canvas formats.

He mainly works with oil on canvas, serigraphs of these motifs are also available.

In his work, he also uses innovative procedures, especially graphic programs and artificial intelligence - however, the resulting work is always fully original. In this way, he mainly follows on the legacy of Zdeněk Sýkora, whom he always admired.
