Jan Edward Helfeld (born 19??) is an American journalist[1][2] and documentarian.[3][4][5] He previously hosted and worked as a reporter for The Bottom Line, a defunct cable access television show in Northern Virginia, where he interviewed a variety of politicians including Joe Biden, Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Bernie Sanders, Barney Frank, Pete Stark, and Esteban Torres.[4][5][6][7][8][9][10]

Afterward, Helfeld turned to YouTube where he uploads short clips of his older interviews for The Bottom Line and broadcasts newer videos featuring politicians and pundits such as Nigel Farage,[11] John McCain,[1] John Bolton,[12] Chris Cillizza,[13] Ben Carson,[14][15] and Gloria Álvarez.[16] Over time, his content has diversified to include debates, political and sociological commentary.[17]

Early life and education

Helfeld was born and raised in Connecticut at some point in the latter half of the 20th century. His father David Helfeld was a Professor Emeritus and the longest-serving dean at the University of Puerto Rico School of Law.[6]

Career

The Bottom Line

Helfeld started hosting and working as a reporter for The Bottom Line in the 1990s.[6] During that time, he interviewed politicians and journalists such as Joe Biden, Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Bernie Sanders, Barney Frank, Pete Stark, Esteban Torres,[4][5][6][7][8][9][10] Daniel Inouye,[1] Bill Richardson.[1][18] and Joseph Hoeffel[1]

In 1995, after the interview with Esteban Torres, member of the United States House of Representatives for California's 34th congressional district from 1983 to 1999, Torres' staffer Roderic Young snatched the videotape from the camera and threw a microphone at Helfeld, and attempted to take the release form signed by Torres consenting to the interview.

Young and Torres called Capitol Police after Helfeld was asked to leave, reporting that Helfeld had stolen the release form. Helfeld was frisked, handcuffed, and escorted to a police van.

Helfeld was released 15 minutes after the incident, free of any charges. Helfeld states the Capitol Police told him he wasn't technically arrested, and they gave him back the release form.[6][7]

Helfeld later sued Torres and Young for false police report, slander, and infliction of emotional distress, and he won $45,000 and an apology in a settlement.[6]

In the early 2000s, Helfeld interviewed former member of the United States House of Representatives Pete Stark about federal debt. At the end of the interview, Stark threatened Helfeld. Stark stated that the size of the national debt is a reflection of the nation's wealth. When pressed if the nation should take on more debt to have more wealth, Stark threatened Helfeld: "You get the fuck out of here or I'll throw you out the window”.[6][8]

YouTube

Helfeld registered his YouTube channel in 2008.[19] His interviews for The Bottom Line surfaced on the internet in this period. Since the opening of his channel, Helfeld has broadcasted additional interviews with politicians and pundits including Gloria Álvarez,[16] Nigel Farage,[11] John McCain,[1] Jim Moran[1] John Bolton,[12] Chris Cillizza,[13] Ben Carson,[14][15] Jeffrey Tucker[20] and David Kelley.[21]

He has debated anarchists Larken Rose,[22] Walter Block,[23] Stephan Kinsella[21][20] and David Friedman.[17]
