Janaki Ayathan
DR. Ayathan Janaki Ammal, the First Woman Doctor and surgeon of Kerala, First Malayali Lady doctor and surgeon of Kerala.
Dr. Ayathan Janaki Ammal (1878-1945) was born into a renowned aristocratic family "Ayathan" of Thalassery, Kannur district. She was born as the fourth child of Ayathan Chandhan and Kallatt Chirutha Ammal. She did her schooling at Thalassery and later at Convent school Calicut. Joined Madras Medical College[1] with a scholarship in 1902 and passed the LMP examination sub assistant surgeon with the highest rank and honours. She earned the name and title as the First Malayali Lady Doctor and Surgeon of Kerala. She is the First Female Doctor and Surgeon of Kerala. In 1907 she joined government service as Assistant surgeon at Chenkelpet government hospital. She was a social activist and a thorough service-oriented personality and dedicated her entire life to help the poor and needy. She served many government hospitals all over Madras and later on came back to Calicut and joined the Leper Asylum as the Physician in charge of the hospital. She passed away in 1945 at the age of 67.
