Janat Dores was a traveller and trader from Marseille. He is famous for the tea and cacao he imported from Asia and his Tea house Janat created in 1872 in Paris.

History[edit]

Janat Dores, from his real name Jean Dores, was the founder of Janat Paris[1] and was a French traveller, explorer and entrepreneur from the late 19th century. He travelled around the world to bring spices, teas and cocoa from the Orient and the New World to the port of Marseille in France.

In 1872 the tea brand Janat Paris was created.

In 1888 during the construction of the Eiffel Tower, Janat Dores met Mr Eiffel. He consulted the engineer for a more efficient way to preserve and transport tea leaves from overseas.

Together, they developed the world’s first oak barrel for tea. Janat Dores created oak barrel-aged tea, by using oak casks made in the Champagne region of France and aging tea leaves in them.

The barrel-aged tea was served in 1889 at the Exposition Universelle[2] in Paris, cementing Dores and Eiffel's life long friendship. [3]

Since this time, the Janat Paris Family collected more than 20 items [4] that belonged to Gustave Eiffel and the original staircase of the Eiffel Tower.

Sam and Beau, cats of Janat Dores[edit]

Sam and beau

Janat Dores owned two cats by the names of Sam and Beau. He loved his cats for being faithful, but also independent. According to Janat Dores “You did not choose the cat; the cat chose you. You do not own the cat; it is the cat who wants to stay by your side.”

As he was travelling around the world, his family was pretty aware of his homecoming, as the two cats always sensed his presence and waited for their master in front of the house, precisely on the day of his arrival. Since then, Sam and Beau became the symbol of Janat brand.

Every box of tea contains the twin cat logo, and the doorstep of every Janat Tea Salon or store is flanked by Sam and Beau statues.

The same two cats can be found outside the Janat Tea Salon in Omotesando.
