Jandila

Jandila is a village in the Jhelum district of Pakistan province Punjab. The village had been inhabited by the people of Awan caste, with a few families of landless workers including potters, cheewars, massalis and mianays. Before independence, there was a family of Sikh who lived in the village and owned the only village shop.

It was a farming village until around 1970s, when the money starting coming in from abroad from the family members who had settled in the UK. Farming was not taken up by the younger generation after 1980 and the practice was abandoned as the old farmers retired or passed away. The younger generation opted for education and jobs in the city and civil service.

A small minority of the villagers have served in all three armed forces of army, navy and air force, including some high ranking officials. The highest ranking naval officer is Tariq Mahmood, who retired as commodore, and the next high rank achieved was by his father Muhammad Suleman who retired as a naval commander. Suleman's uncle was the highest ranking official, a captain, in British Army, while his father Zain ul Abedin and three brothers, Fazal ur Rehman, Abdul Aziz and Abdul Hamid also served in army. Some of the army officials were prisoners of war in Rangoon during the Second World War while fighting for British Army and captured by Japanese.

The other notable person is Abdul Majid, also brother of Suleman who served as a director at Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL).

A significant number of villagers live abroad,mostly in the UK, but some in the USA and Canada.
