Janet Uosu Gbam is a Nigerian human rights lawyer, co-founder and executive director of the Network of Pro-bono Lawyers, a non-governmental organization offering legal representation to underprivileged persons in Nigeria.[1] She is a certified counselor in Basic Counseling and Rehabilitation skills by Benue State University and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).[2] She is also a 2017 Mandela Washington Fellow and a Mandela Rhodes Scholar.[3]

In 2013, Gbam obtained her law degree from Benue State University.[4] In 2015, she was called to the Nigerian Bar. As a Mandela Washington Fellow, she completed a Civic Leadership certificate at Rutgers University in 2017.[5] In 2020, she obtained a Master of human rights law degree from the University of Pretoria's Centre for Human Rights.[3] Presently, she is a doctoral researcher at the same institution[6]
Career[edit]
Gbam has over a decade of experience working with teams and volunteering within several justice organizations in the pursuit of promoting and safeguarding human rights.[7][8] She led the Pro bono unit at Ovbagbedia & Co, legal practitioners securing the freedom of incarcerated individuals facing trials without proper legal representation.[2] In addition, she had worked with international NGOs including Brooklyn Defenders Services in New York, Catholic Relief Services, and Caritas Nigeria, among others.[6][9] Presently, Gbam serves as a program manager at the Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria in South Africa.[4] She an Associate member of the Royal Commonwealth Society.[1]
Network of Pro-bono Lawyers[edit]
Gbam and her colleagues, Ahmed Adetola-Kazeem and Oboirien Katumi, established a non-governmental organization (NGO) known as the Network of Pro Bono Lawyers in Nigeria.[10][11] The mission of the network is to promote human rights and offer legal assistance to disadvantaged individuals and groups.[12] The network has over 500 pro bono lawyers in their legal community.[13] To date, they have handled 1,018 cases across various courts, including the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeal in Nigeria, with a success rate of 1,000 cases.[12]
