Jangsan Tiger
The Jangsan Tiger (Hangul: 장산범; RR: jangsanbeom) or Mimic Tiger is a man-eating tiger-like creature in South Korean urban legends. It became popular through internet communities such as Jambamgi (잠밤기; lit. sleepover). The myth originated in Daegu and the creature is named after Jangsan, a mountain in the city of Busan it is believed to reside.[1]
It inspired the 2017 South Korean horror movie The Mimic (장산범; Jangsanbeom)[2] and appears in other South Korean media such as God Jangsan Tiger an manhwa series released from 2023 to 2024 on Webtoon.[3]
Description
It is believed to have crimson skin, long white fur, sharp teeth and crawls on all fours. It is so fast that it can look like white lightning or even a human. It can imitate the sound of rain and human language to lure people and possess them.[4][5]
It is also very similar to a lion mask (사자탈; sajatal) used in traditional Korean Bukcheong Lion Dance.
