Janis Isa Roswick (born April 23, 1952) is an American Professional Dancer, Actress, Musician, Screenwriter, Singer, Composer, Animator and much more. Best known for working at the legendary Disney Studios, like The Little Mermaid (1989), Beauty and The Beast (1991), Disney The Girls's Movies, Aladdin (1992), The Lion King (1994), Pocahontas (1995) and much more. She is an Academy Awards Legend and also won the title Disney Legends in 2001.
Early life
Janis was born in New Rochelle, New York. She is the second child of Edith Ruth Roswick (née Goldman), a Professional Ballet Dancer, and Aaron Roswick, a pianist. Janis has an older brother and three younger sisters. She was raised Protestant and Jewish.
Enter In The World of Dance
In 1958, aged 6 years old, she entered The New York City Ballet to learn Ballet and Modern Dance with great teachers like Leon Danielian and Valentina Pereyaslavec. The ballet teachers remarked on Janis' original way of dancing. [1] [2] [3]
A Special Documentary
Filmmaker and Actor William Richert decided to make a Documentary called A Dancer's Life about The New York City Ballet and its Dancers. This Documentary made Janis' first on screen appearance. The Documentary is produced by Warner Bros. Pictures. [4] [5] [6] [7] [8]
Working on Beauty and The Beast The Musical
In 1993, Janis' husband, composer, actor, and artist Alan Menken, suggested to Disney President Michael Eisner to make a version of Beauty and The Beast on Broadway. After a few months, Eisner agreed with the idea. The production began in 1993 and finished in 1994. Beauty and The Beast opened on Broadway for the first time on April 18, 1994. Beauty and The Beast became the first animated feature to be rendered in a Broadway version. Janis won the Tony Award for all her works on the musical. [9] [10]
Personal life
In 1971, Janis met Alan Menken, who came to compose, play piano, and learn dance at The New York City Ballet. They married in November 1972. They have two children, born in 1973 and 1976.[11] [12]
