Janusz Walkowicz (22 March 1926 – 27 March 2007) was Polish hydrologist, associate professor (docent), PhD in hydraulic engineering, and specialist in water management and applied hydrology. He is the author of empirical methods for calculating peak flows in small and medium catchments, known in professional literature as Walkowicz's formulas..[1]
Biography
Walkowicz was born on 22 March 1926 in Basiówka (now Basivka) near Lwów. During World War II, as a young man, he engaged in independence activities and joined the ranks of the Home Army. As part of his underground resistance activities, he was involved in minor sabotage, forging identity documents, and preparing false travel passes for the Polish underground.In 1945, as a result of post-war border shifts, he relocated with his family from Lviv to Wroclaw. He then enrolled at the Wroclaw University of Science and Technology (Polish: Politechnika Wrocławska), becoming a student in the university's first post-war academic year. The Walkowicz family were among the post-war residents of the historic Moritz Cohn Villa in Wroclaw at 202 Powstańców Śląskich Street, where they lived continuously until 2009.[2]
Walkowicz was closely tied to Wrocław's academic community specializing in hydrology and water management. In 1966, he earned his doctor of technical sciences (PhD) degree.[3] In his later career, he worked as an associate professor (docent) at institutions including the Institute of Environmental Protection (formerly the Institute of Environmental Development).
Scientific activity
Walkowicz specialised in applied hydrology, water resources protection, and the regionalization of river flows. In the 1960s, he developed an original empirical method for determining peak discharge in small, hydrometrically ungauged mountain catchments. In the following decades, these formulas were expanded and adapted for various regions of Poland, including the Sudetes, Carpathians, Świętokrzyskie Mountains, and the Lublin Upland.[4] This method relied on analysing the catchment's morphometric parameters, watercourse length, precipitation, longitudinal slopes, and runoff coefficients.
In 1988, Walkowicz was employed at the Institute of Environmental Protection, where his research focused on mean low run-off (SNQ) and the relationship between catchment surface area and characteristic low flows.[5]
His scientific contributions and publications were cataloged in successive volumes of the national "Bibliography of Polish Geography" published by the Institute of Geography and Spatial Organization of the Polish Academy of Sciences. [6][7][8]
Practical significance
Walkowicz's formulas became a staple of Polish engineering hydrology. They have been widely used in engineering and land reclamation design, including hydrological calculations for road culverts, small bridges, drainage systems, retention reservoirs, and agricultural drainage networks.
