Jari Saario

Jari Saario (born March 26, 1972 in Rauma[1]) is a Finnish firefighter who plans to become the first person to row across the Atlantic Ocean twice.[2]

He left for the first crossing on 23 January 2023 from Gran Canaria and arrived on 28 March in Antigua in the Caribbean Sea. He left Canada for the return journey at the end of June.[3] Saario has had to face many problems on the way, such as the rudder partially broken by the traction anchor[4] and the autopilots partially breaking down.[5] The specially made boat used by Saario has cost around 100,000 euros.[6] The boat has solar cells that generate electricity and a small cabin for sleeping. For food, Saario has bags of dry food, nuts and chocolate. Needs on the boat have to be done with a bottle and a bucket.[7]

Saario has received a lot of social media attention with his feat. Through social media, he gets support and also helpful tips for traveling.[8]

Saario spent his wedding day with his wife Heidi[9] while in the Atlantic.[8]
