Joseph "Jay" Caruso (born August 3, 1970) is an American journalist who is a columnist and editorial board member for the Dallas Morning News.[1]

Early life and career

Caruso was born on August 3, 1970, in the Queens borough of New York City, New York, to Frank Grillo and Christine Chaplinski. His step-father, Joseph Caruso, adopted him at a young age. His parents later moved the family to Carteret, New Jersey, where he graduated from Carteret High School in 1988.

Caruso is an avid New York Yankees and Giants fan.

In 1997, he moved to Palm Coast, Florida where he worked as an analyst. He also began writing and editing video for his local church.[2]

In 2013, Caruso moved his family to the Atlanta, Georgia suburbs. During this time he founded the site Pocketful of Liberty.[3]

In 2015, Caruso became a front page contributor at the conservative website, RedState[4], where he rose to prominence as an oppositional voice to then-candidate and President Donald Trump.[5]

In October 2016, he was promoted to Assistant Managing Editor at RedState, next to Managing Editor Caleb Howe.[6]

During this time Caruso appeared multiple times on CNN[7][8] and MSNBC's Morning Joe.[9] His writings also appeared at National Review,[10] The Daily Beast,[11] The Federalist,[12] and The Atlantic[13]

In July 2017, Caruso moved to Dallas, Texas when he was hired by the Dallas Morning News to round out the editorial board as the lone conservative.[14]

Personal life

Caruso has one half-brother, as well as two children with his first wife.
