Jay Ducote
Jay Douglas Ducote (born August 20,1981) is an American chef, culinary personality, speaker, radio and television host from Baton Rouge, LA. He is known for appearances on television cooking competition shows, his work celebrating Louisiana cuisine, and his media and product ventures focused on food culture.
Early life and education
Jay Ducote grew up in south Louisiana, where he developed an early interest in food through family gatherings, hunting and fishing camps, and Louisiana State University (LSU) tailgating culture. His culinary journey began informally while hosting LSU tailgate parties as a student. Ducote earned bachelor’s degrees in economics and political science as well as a master’s degree in political science from LSU. [1] [2]
Career
Blogging, media, and radio
In 2009 Ducote started the blog Bite & Booze, initially documenting meals and experiences before it grew into a broader media presence encompassing food writing, events, and radio. He hosted The Bite & Booze Radio Show in Baton Rouge, which won a Taste Award for best food or drink radio broadcast in the United States and the Uniquely Louisiana Award from the Louisiana Association of Broadcasters.[3]
Ducote has also written for a variety of publications, including regional magazines and national outlets, sharing stories about food culture, recipes, and travel.
Television
Ducote competed on Season 11 of the reality competition series Food Network Star, finishing as runner-up in 2015.[4] He has appeared on several other television programs, including Cutthroat Kitchen, MasterChef, Eat St., andChopped.[5] [6] [7] [8] Ducote also appeared on the Food Network’s Beat Bobby Flay, where he won an episode after challenging Bobby Flay to a crawfish boil cookoff.[9] Ducote has been a featured chef on ESPN College GameDay twice, highlighting his combined love for food, tailgating, and entertaining. [10] He now hosts a local TV series called Louisiana Catch & Cook, which combines key aspects of Louisiana culture such as fishing, camping, and cooking.[11]
Culinary ventures and products
Ducote has expanded into food products and culinary concepts. He launched a line of products under the brand Jay D’s, including Louisiana barbecue sauce, molasses mustard, barbecue rubs, wine collaborations, and coffee. In 2018 he introduced *Gov’t Taco*, a taco concept in Baton Rouge that blends Louisiana flavors with modern street food.[12] [13]

Beyond broadcasting and television, Ducote continues to cook at private events, pop-up dinners, and culinary festivals across the United States. He has cooked for large events and been invited to cook at the historic James Beard House in New York City.[14]
Publications & Presentations
Ducote is the author of Jay Ducote’s Louisiana Outdoor Cooking, published in 2020 by LSU Press. The book contains more than 150 recipes alongside stories from his culinary journey rooted in Louisiana outdoor cooking and tailgating traditions.[15]
In 2017, Jay used his love for comestibles and his knowledge of political science to give a TEDx Talk at his alma mater on the intersection between our local consumption and its effects on the greater economy, highlighting a new approach to conscioius capitalism.[16]
Personal life
Ducote resides in Baton Rouge and travels frequently for culinary and cultural exploration. He emphasizes storytelling through food and often refers to himself as a cultural gastronomist, blending cooking with travel, writing, and entertainment. He continues to participate in culinary pop-ups while traveling the world.[17]
