Jay Knower (born November 15, 1977), is an American entrepreneur, teacher, writer, and politician who lives in New Hampshire.

Early Life and Education[edit]

Knower was born in Hillsboro, Wisconsin. His father was a used car dealer and his mother was a stay at home mom. They relocated to Baraboo, Wisconsin, when he was in junior high. At Baraboo High School, Knower was a track and cross-country runner, earning captain status in both sports. Knower graduated from the University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh with a Bachelor’s Degree in English. After college, Knower relocated to New Hampshire in 2003, and shortly thereafter received a Master’s in English Education from Plymouth State University.

Career[edit]

After finishing his degree at Plymouth State, Knower began teaching English classes at the University as an Adjunct Professor in the English Department, where he specialized in Composition and Advanced Composition (Rhetoric) classes. While at PSU, he was elected Speaker of the Adjunct Professors. As Speaker, Knower’s main focus was to create an adjunct union in order to address the lack of security and pay equity that was available to adjuncts. The campaign was successful and Knower served on the committee to negotiate the first adjunct contract. Knower and his wife Catherine founded Knower Academics, an academic services company specializing in test prep and other one-to-one student support. Knower Academics now employees over 20 instructors and serves students throughout New Hampshire’s Lakes Region. In 2019, Governor Sununu appointed Knower as a public member of New Hampshire’s College Savings Plan Advisory Commission, which oversees New Hampshire’s 529 plan and scholarship fund.

Political Work[edit]

Knower volunteered for the Obama 2008 campaign, and received his first experience with the power of grassroots organizing. In 2014, Knower was elected to the board of the Rumney Climbers’ Association, an organization dedicated to conservation and education related to rock climbing on the cliffs near Rumney, NH. In 2016, the RCA, led by Knower and his fellow board members, conducted a fundraising campaign, with the help of the Access Fund, to purchase the last remaining private land on the Rumney hillside, thereby protecting the land from development. In 2017, Knower was elected Chair of the Plymouth Area Democrats, and oversaw the political activities of 18 towns in New Hampshire. He spearheaded the fundraising and outreach during the 2018 Midterm elections that saw success in practically every local election.

Outdoor Sports[edit]

Knower is an avid rock climber, runner, cyclist, and skier. He’s completed two marathons, has run the Presidential Traverse in New Hampshire, and often commutes by bike. Perhaps best known as a rock climber, Knower has climbed El Capitan, completed alpine first ascents in the Northwest Territories, and climbed at the 5.14 difficulty level. Knower started the New Hampshire portion of MountainProject.com, the most popular rock climbing website in the country.

Publications[edit]

In 2016, Knower completed a well-reviewed book devoted to his childhood climbing area in Devil’s Lake: A Climbing Guide, available through Wolverine Press.

Personal Life[edit]

Knower lives in Campton, New Hampshire with his wife Kayte, his daughter June, and Topher the Mountain Poodle.
