Jayy Dodd, stylized jayy dodd (born 1992) is a literary and performance artist and acclaimed poet born in Los Angeles, California, now based in Portland, Oregon. Her name is customarily written in lower case.[1]
Biography[edit]
dodd grew up in California in a Christian family, with parents from Louisiana and Texas who are both ministers.[2][3]She is an only child and went to boarding school in Connecticut before attending Tufts University, studying sociology and dance.[4] After college, dodd was involved with Black Lives Matter in Boston before becoming a full-time artist and returning to the West Coast.
Work[edit]
dodd's published works include The Black Condition ft. Narcissus, published by Nightboat Books in 2019,[5]and Mannish Tongues[6] (released by Platypus Press in 2017). Bustle Magazine wrote that "Tracking jayy dodd's transition and the rise of Trump's America, The Black Condition ft. Narcissus is a timely collection of deeply moving poetry."[7] Bookriot wrote that it "feels like a fairytale."[8]
Her poetry has been published by Academy of American Poets' Poem-a-Day,[9] Assaracus: A Journal of Gay Poetry,[10] BOAAT Journal,[11] Guernica,[12] Hyperallergic,[13] LitHub,[14] The Offing,[15] and elsewhere. Her nonfiction and commentary has been published by Roxane Gay's Gay Mag,[16] Entropy,[17] Medium,[18] Poetry Foundation,[19] and Vice,[20] and her choreography, performance, and music have been featured in Datableed Zine[21] and All of Us Witches.[22] dodd's editorial work include A Portrait in Blues[23] (Platypus Press, 2017) and Bettering American Poetry Volume 2 [24] (Bettering Books, 2017).
dodd is gender non-conforming and black, and has used her work to address gender, race, sexuality, and their intersections.[25][26][27] She has cited Essex Hemphill, Pepper LaBieja, and Gil Scott-Heron as influences on her work.[28][29]
She has been interviewed by Entropy,[30] Fields,[31] Los Angeles Review of Books,[32]and VIDA,[33] and was a 2017 Lambda Literary Writers Retreat Fellow.[34]
Arab Canadian writer, activist, cultural critic and university professor Trish Salah has written that "jayy dodd is a genius and I will say that again."[35]
She is the Executive Director of Dovesong Labs,[36][37] "melding art & literature between the digital & material worlds."
