Jazz Hawk
The Jazz Hawk is a semi-fictional character of nouveau-mythology, billed by The Silver Lynx Sporadical as, "the coolest mythical beast you've never heard of."[1] The Jazz Hawk first appeared in the short story 'A Brief History of the Jazz Hawk' on The Silver Lynx Sporadical website. The Jazz Hawk is described as "a long-haired, six-foot-two-inch, one-hundred-and-seventy-five-pound bag of flesh and blood"[2] with a powerful upper-body, a God-like beard, and the wings of an albatross. The Jazz Hawk states: "All I want to do in this life […] is make people cry whilst I eat their children, and play jazz-flute victory solos wherever I make misery."
In the story's fictional setting of Voomeehaw, the Jazz Hawk viciously murders an adolescent called Mouse-boy, ultimately whittling a flute from the victim's femur as a trophy. This 'femur-flute' is the tool he uses to dispatch of the story's real villain, Gilly, whom he subsequently pumps 'like an oil well' in front of his tied up parents. Though Gilly's crimes are never made entirely clear, 'A Brief History of the Jazz Hawk' is explicit and unequivocal about his unsavoury nature, calling him a shoe-in for the Jazz Hawk's "particular brand of murderous wrath". In the denouement, Mr. and Mrs. Mouse-boy, the parents of the Jazz Hawk's first victim, lead a parade in honour of the Jazz Hawk by presenting him with the key to Voomeehaw.
