Jean-Baptiste Béranger (*1975 in Champigny-sur-Marne, France) is a French-Swedish artist and photographer who lives and works in Stockholm, Sweden. Besides his artistic practice as a photographer, he is specialized in art and exhibition documentation. He is represented in the collection of Public Art Agency Sweden (Statens konstråd), Le Fonds d'art contemporain - Paris Collections and Uppsala Municipality (Uppsala kommun) and has been a visiting lecturer at Konstfack University of Arts, Crafts and Design and at Kungl. Konsthögskolan (Royal Institute of Art).
Education
Béranger entered the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1995, where he studied under Vincent Barré and Barbara Leisgen. He graduated in 2000 with a Diplôme national supérieur d'arts plastiques (Dnsap - masters equivalent)[1], spending several months at the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm as part of this study. From 2000 to 2001, Béranger spent an additional year as a visiting student in Stockholm, studying under Johan Scott. His studies were followed by a one-year residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris.
Exhibitions
Béranger exhibited for the first time in the late 1990s, in the exhibition Visages et Expressions curated by Alfred Pacquement at the Beaux-Arts de Paris' premises in Paris in 1999, and in the same year in the exhibition Dans le pli du rideau at Galleri Mejan, the showroom of the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm. In 2000, while still a student, his work was showcased at Galerie Nathalie Pariente in Paris, followed by the exhibition Sincères Félicitations, curated by Anne Tronche, a group show of graduates who received their degrees by a unanimous or majority decision of the Dnsap jury with congratulations. Already before this exhibition he was part of the project Krig, curated by Jan Stene in the Hörtorget buildings in Stockholm with students of the Royal Institute of Art. Other exhibitions in France followed, between 2003 and 2005, at the Cité Internationale des Arts and Frac Haute-Normandie, and he was also part of the exhibition Objectif Paris in Pavillon des Arts, curated by Anne Cartier-Bresson. Before the gallery closed, Béranger had two solo exhibitions (2004[2] and 2007) at Galerie Aronowitsch, and was part of the exhibition En subjektiv historia 1966-2011 in 2012, curated by gallerist William Aronowitsch at the Royal Academy (Konstakademien) in Stockholm.[3] In 2007, Béranger worked on the project Magnitude with photographer Björn Larsson at Panoptikon Fotografins Hus, located in Mindepartementet on Skeppsholmen, Stockholm. In 2010, Béranger exhibited together with Zandra Ahl at Konstnärshuset as part of the project Konsthandeln c/o Konstnärshuest initiated by Niclas Östlind, Joakim Geiger and Cecilia Hillström.[4] Hillström, founder of Cecilia Hillström Gallery, exhibited Béranger in the solo shows Telles que sont les choses[5] in 2013 and Quiddity[6] in 2017. In 2019, he was part of the group show FROM THE OTHER SIDE curated Jenny Bergman and Stephen McKenzie in the exhibition space hangmanProjects, open from 2014 to 2021, run by Hangman.[7]
Scholarships
Between 2002 and 2012, Béranger received scholarships from the City of Paris, the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts and three grants from The Swedish Arts Grants Committee (Konstnärsnämnden).
Public commissions
From 2010 to 2012, Béranger's project Just Visiting was shown at the Mariatorget metro station in Stockholm, as part of the project Konst i tunnnelbanan, commissioned by the City of Stockholm (Region Stockholm).[8] They also commissioned his project Tvål, vatten och allt det andra at Södersjukhuset hospital in 2019.[9] In 2013, the city of Uppsala commissioned Béranger for the project Kontinuitetprincipen at Psykiatrins Hus, part of Uppsala University Hospital.
