Jean-Denys Choulet (born October 16, 1958 in Besançon, France) is a French basketball coach. During his career, Choulet has managed to win the French Championship twice, the first time in 2007 with Roannes, Chorals de Roanne, the second time in 2017 with Chalon-sur-Saônes, Chalonnais.[1]

Biography

Originally from Maîche, Franche-Comté area of France[2], due to his father's career, the family was able to move abroad. Choulet spent most of his youth abroad during the school year, returning to France for his summer holiday, where he and his brother would often cliff dive on the cote d'azur coast. During a lengthy stay in Portugal he was able to obtain a blackbelt in Judo, training under a 7th ranked world class master of Judo. When the family would eventually relocate to Mexico Choulet would subsequently abandon the sport for a three-year period, as he wasn't able to find a proper teacher. It was during this time that he discovered basketball. Choulet is fluent in English, having also lived in the United States for a period of time, along with being fluent in Spanish, with the ability to understand Portuguese and Italian. Choulet is a passionate Rock and Blues lover, often blasting it out in the area's sound system[3].

Returning to France as an adult, Choulet started a career path to becoming a physical education teacher, and eventually ended up joining a basketball club as an assistant coach in Besançon, helping to bring the team to the National 4 league. From the age of 26, Choulet has held a coaching position, first among young leagues, then the women's team in the National 2 league. Choulet subsequently went on to hold the position of coach at Vesontio (now Besançon BCD), succeeding head coach Charlie Auffray, whom he worked under as assistant coach the previous season.

The team was eventually able to reach financial success, and join the National 1 A league. Choulet would later go on to join the Mulhouse women's team, a team that had just joined the elite league, but a bankruptcy filing would interrupt his tenure during the following season.

In search of a new team, a series of financial failures would lead him to joining a few teams in subsequent order. Choulet would later join National 2 team, Vrigne-aux-Bois, whom he brought to join the Pro B league, but a bankruptcy filing ended that venture as well. Following that stint, Choulet joined a Pro B team in Châlons-en-Champagne leaving to join Dunkirk, in yet another period of financial distress, as the team was under financial constraints. Despite the low funding for his efforts, Choulet nevertheless managed to maintain the team in the Pro A league. Growing tired of working under these conditions, he announced in the course of the 1999–2000 season his decision to step down at the end of the season.

Chorale de Roanne team President, Daniel Perez, would later convince Choulet to return to the sport by joining the Pro B league team based in Roanne.[4] Under his leadership, within two years he would lead them to victories up to join the elite league in 2002.[5]

For the 2006–2007 season, Choulet scored his first leadership victory, with a national championship win. The team's first win was the Semaine des As Cup (now LNB Pro A Leaders Cup), then followed up that win with winning the French championship, by beating Nancy by 81 to 74. Choulet would later be named Coach of the Year for the 2007 season.[6]

Choulet was removed (dismissed) from his duties as coach on November 15, 2011, after 11 years on the bench.[7] In August of that year, Choulet reached an agreement with the Lebanese team President to join United Club Tripoli,[8] to become head coach for one season.[9][10][11] Finishing the season in fourth place with 11 wins and 7 losses. Unsuccessfully recruited by Limoges CSP Choulet would eventually be hired by Chalon-sur-Saônes, Chalonnais.[12]

On October 29, 2013, Choulet was appointed head coach of Chalon-sur-Saône to replace Mickaël Hay, who was fired two days earlier.[13] Choulet would eventually lead the team to play the playoffs by ranking 8th place during the 2013–2014 season and 2014–2015 season, being eliminated in the quarter-finals both times. At the end of his contract in 2016, he extended his contract with the Chalonnais team by two years on February 10, 2016, which extended his new contract until 2018.[14] Choulet won his second French championship title with Chalonnais in 2017.[15]

On April 23, 2018, Choulet was appointed Head Coach of the Cameroon national team.[16] On November 14, 2018, he stepped down from the role by mutual agreement with the Cameroonian federation.[17]

On January 3, 2020, Choulet returned to the bench as head coach of the Chorale de Roanne[18], bringing the team to victory and moving it up into the Elite league from the Pro B league.[19] On 23 April 2020, Choulet extended his contract for two more years with the Chorales, until 2022.[20] Choulet would later extend his contract another two years, until 2024.[21]

Coaching style

Choulet is known for taking what can best be described as an American basketball coach's approach to French basketball. He likes the way Americans play the game with their own style and flair on the court, that isn't often seen by French players[22][23]. His frank,[24] but honest manner as a coach has brought him praise, as someone who can be stern but does listen to his players.[25][26][27] For Choulet, talent isn't enough to being a good player, you have to put in the work to achieve greatness.[28] Choulet has said,"I have always wanted to recruit offensively competitive players. I like these style of players, it engages the spectators and fills the stands. It's a win-win situation for everybody."[29] Choulet's keen eye for great players,[30] has given him a reputation as a great recruiter for talent.[31][32] Using statistics and compiling data,[33] Choulet finds and recruits players worldwide, to play in France[34][35][36][37]. His skills at developing players is evident in their performances and subsequent salary increases, that has lead to losing players to teams with bigger budgets for players salaries.[38] Choulet's outspoken nature during matches[39], has occasionally resulted in suspensions and expulsions from matches.[40][41][42][43]
