Jean-Marc Ginoux (born 1969) is a French mathematician and historian of science. He serves as an associate professor (Maître de conférences, HDR) in applied mathematics at the University of Toulon, where he conducts his research at the Laboratoire d'Informatique et des Systèmes (LIS, CNRS UMR 7020) within the SIM research group. He is also an associate researcher at the Archives Henri Poincaré (CNRS UMR 7117) and teaches the history of science at engineering institutions including CentraleSupélec and the École centrale de Marseille. In 2023, he founded the Institut Jules Verne.
Education and Academic Career
Ginoux completed a PhD in applied mathematics at the University of Toulon in 2005, focusing on the geometric analysis of non-linear dynamical systems. He obtained his Habilitation à diriger des recherches (HDR) in 2008. He later pursued further studies in the humanities and earned a second PhD in the history of science from Pierre and Marie Curie University (Paris VI) in 2011.
Research Interests
Ginoux's academic production bridges mathematical physics and the history of modern science:
- Applied Mathematics: His work focuses on non-linear differential equations, chaotic synchronization, the characterization of "slow manifolds" in multi-time-scale (slow-fast) dynamical systems, and the compact modeling of memristive devices.
- History of Science: He specializes in early 20th-century physics, tracking the transition between Henri Poincaré's and Albert Einstein's mathematical formalisms. He has also extensively documented the history of French non-linear mechanics and the early development of plasma science.
