Jean Bowden-Green
Jean Bowden-Green (16 October 1920 – 4 November 2016), also known as Jean Bowden, was a British author. Writing under several pseudonyms, she wrote more than 80 books between 1960 and 2007, retiring officially in 2010.[1]. She is most widely published under the pseudonym Tessa Barclay[2]
Life and career
Jean Bowden-Green was born Jean Hill in Edinburgh, Scotland, the youngest of six children. In 1958 she published her first novel, Island of Love, under the pseudonym Belinda Dell. After publishing as Avon Curry, Lee Mackenzie, Barbara Annandale, Jennifer Bland and Jocelyn Barry, Jean published A Sower Went Forth in 1980, her first novel as Tessa Barclay. She published a further 27 books as Tessa Barclay, including the Craigallans Series, the Wine Widow trilogy, and the Corvill Weavers trilogy. Her final novel as Tessa Barclay was To Die For, published in 2007. In total she also published five books under the pseudonym Avon Curry, 20 as Belinda Dell, 18 as Lee Mackenzie, three as Barbara Annandale, and two as Jennifer Bland.
Alongside her own writing career, Jean worked for Panther Books, Four Square Books and Armada Books. She then became a feature writer for Woman's Mirror and was the Assistant Fiction Editor for Woman's Own for seven years from 1964 to 1971. From 1971 onward she was an editorial consultant to Mills and Boon.
Personal life
Jean moved to London in 1936 to take up a civil service position with the postal service. She married George Bowden-Green in 1942. She had two sons and two grandchildren.
Jean was Vice President of the Society of Women Writers and Journalists and President of Croydon Writers[3]. She was also a member of the Crime Writers Association[4]
