Early life and family
LCDR Mathurin was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti and attended the University of South Florida in Tampa, Florida. He graduated from Ross University School of Medicine in Dominica, and began his naval career in Officer Candidate School in 2010 in Newport, Rhode Island. His goal is to one day work as a Global Health specialist for USAID or the U.S. Department of State in Haiti.

Lieutenant Commander Jean Gilnord Mathurin, MD, USN (born May 11, 1978) is a Haitian-American author and Physician. He is a Naval Medical Officer, a former physiology professor at Staten Island College, Staten Island, NY.
Career
Early Career Dr. Mathurin began his early professional career at the age of 13 in Haiti as a photographer. Upon migrating to the United States, he started as a dishwasher at the Seminole Indian Casino in Immokalee, FL. He briefly attended college at Edison Community College in Fort-Myers, FL. Later, after receiving a full migrant scholarship, he attended Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in Tifton, GA. He then transferred to Florida State University, Tallahassee, FL, for 1 semester before transferring to the University of South Florida, Tampa, Florida, where he studied languages and biology. After completing his medical degree from Ross University in Dominica, Dr. Mathurin was commissioned as an Active Duty Naval Medical Officer and did his residency in family medicine at the Naval Hospital in Pensacola, Florida. He did his utilization tour as a staff family physician at Naval Hospital in Yokosuka, Japan. He is currently an Aerospace Medical Resident in Pensacola, FL.
