Jean N Utumatwishima, MD, MPH, PhD (c)Jean N Utumatwishima, MD, MPH, PhD(c) is the Director General of Ruhengeri Referral Hospital in Northern Rwanda. He is Lecturer of Human Anatomy and Physiology at the Institute of Applied Sciences (INES Ruhengeri). Dr Utumatwishima graduated from the University of Rwanda with an MBBS in 2009. He received his Master of Public Health from Manchester Metropolitan University in 2016. He is the inaugural USA National Institutes of Health (NIH) Research Fellow resulting from the training program initiated between the NIH and the Rwanda Ministry of Health. He has been honored by the East Virginia Medical School (EVMS) with the Jefferson Cup as the Brock Scholar of 2017. In 2015, PBS News Hour profiled his leadership contribution towards eliminating Mother-to-Child HIV transmission in a rural Rwandan hospital. Much of his time as a physician has been spent in surgery where he has operated on more than 500 thyroid tumors after completing 2 years of general surgery training at Ruhengeri Hospital. His research training at NIH was about understanding the risk factors contributing to the increase of cardiometabolic diseases in populations of African descent. He recently authored a scientific review published in Nature Reviews Endocrinology entitled “Reversing the tide of diabetes epidemics in Africa”. ...
