Jed Brian is a southeastern Illinois filmmaker who is best known for his hit Amazon top-selling found footage horror film Unlisted Owner.[1] Writer/Director Jed Brian was excited to see *Unlisted Owner* doing so well on the Amazon charts, especially being from a small town in Illinois. [2] Jed did not go to film school or have any experience in the field, as he had majored in digital entertainment and game design.[3]
Early life
Brian is from the southeastern Illinois town of Sumner.[4] Ever since Jed was little, he had always been a huge scary movie fan. His parents would take him to haunted houses and decorate the yard extensively for Halloween. Many horror films had inspired Jed over the years, including the *Hostel* films by Eli Roth and *House on Haunted Hill* with Vincent Price. Brian was so inspired by Roth's *Hostel* film that it made him want to make a film about something that he actually feared. [5]
Film career
Unlisted Owner
Unlisted Owner is about some friends who are getting ready to go on a camping trip for the weekend. The place where they camp is close to a house where a murder has taken place. After a night of heavy drinking, they decide to break into the house. The film includes discovered footage that was edited by the Lawford County Sheriffs Department as crime scene evidence. The footage is made up of four hand-held cameras, a police dash cam, and an integration video from the police department.[6]
- Unlisted Owner* was filmed in the small town of Sumner, IL, also Brian's hometown, by Lawford County Productions. Brian's cast were friends who lived in surrounding areas. Brian wanted people to feel what it is like living in the Midwest; the film was released by Tomcat Films/Summerhill Films in 2017.[7] Brian has stated his reasoning for making the film in found footage was because of funding: "So for me to be able to fund a movie I needed to make something low-budget. What better way to do a low-budget horror than found footage? So *Unlisted Owner* was written around the resources I had at my fingertips."[8] *Unlisted Owner* was hyped so much in the local community that it actually sold out online and skyrocketed to the number 9 spot on Amazon's top 100 hot new horror release list. [9]
Release
- Unlisted Owner* was climbing the top 100 horror charts on Amazon. The film stayed on the top 100 hot new horror release list for a while, competing against some of the biggest horror franchises out there.[10]
