Career[edit]

Jeff Smith is a noted HR executive in his field. He is an expert in the art of employee management, having honed his experience for multiple decades after his formal education in psychology. Having overseen business operations, performance evaluations, compensation packages, and recruiting, his leadership style and people skills are proven assets to his colleagues.

For more than 10+ years, Smith was the Head of Global Human Resources at BlackRock HR. He was a member of several committees during this critical point in his career, including Global Executive, Global Operating, and Compensation Committee of the Board of Directors. From the first year he served at the company, he was constantly thinking of ways to make human resources run more efficiently.

Over the course of his career, Smith led numerous initiatives in his department, including the overhaul of BlackRock’s hiring agenda. By focusing on diversity in the talent pool, he invited more voices and perspectives to the table. He’s adept at advising senior management on how to invest their capital in the people that make their business possible. He is a strong advocate for organizational change, so it fits the ever-changing needs of employees as well as the overall culture of the company.

From succession planning to analytics, Jeff Smith sets a high bar for his team. With a PhD in industrial-organizational psychology, he understands how employees and groups fit together in different situations. When operations start to slow or stall, he takes it upon himself to understand what the problem is so he can intervene. Jeff Smith was instrumental as a co-lead when BlackRock merged with Barclays Global Investors (BGI) in 2009. Before joining BlackRock, he was the VP of People Development at TimeWarner and the Sr. Consultant of Personnel Decisions International.

Jeff Smith is regularly invited to be a speaker at both business schools and industry conferences on both talent innovation and culture, and his work has been featured in everything from the Harvard Business Review to books on how to maximize your recruiting efforts, including Talent Wins by Ram Charan, Dominic Barton and Dennis Carey.
