Jeffrey A. Cooper

Jeffrey A. Cooper (born May 22, 1968) is an American lawyer, law professor and author. He is a Professor of Law and Associate Dean for Research and Faculty Development at Quinnipiac Law School.[1] He is an expert in trusts and estates, estate planning, and tax history and policy. He joined the Quinnipiac faculty in 2005. He has also taught as a visiting professor at Yale Law School and University of Connecticut School of Law.[1] Prior to becoming a legal academic, he was a partner at the law firm of Cummings & Lockwood, a Vice President of U.S. Trust Company, and a Senior Advisor to Fiduciary Trust Company International.[1] He currently serves as Special Counsel to the law firm of Shipman and Goodwin.[2] He is a published author of both nonfiction and fiction.

Education

He graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University with an A.B. in government in 1990 and received his J.D. from Yale Law School in 1993.[1] He subsequently received an LL.M. in Taxation from New York University School of Law.[1]

Academia

Cooper is currently a Professor of Law and Associate Dean for Research and Faculty Development at Quinnipiac Law School, where he has taught since 2005.[1] His courses include Estate and Financial Planning, Federal Estate and Gift Taxation, Property, Tax Policy and Trusts and Estates.[3] He is the primary advisor for the Quinnipiac Probate Law Journal.[4]

Professional activities

Cooper is a member of the Executive Committee of the Estates & Probate Section of the Connecticut Bar Association.[5] He is also an academic fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel.[6] He is a former editor of the ACTEC Law Journal.[7]

Awards

In his teaching career he has been named a Quinnipiac University Faculty Scholar,[8] Commencement Hooding Professor, as well as Professor of the Year.[9] He is a Life Fellow of the James W. Cooper Fellows of the Connecticut Bar Foundation.[10]

Writing

Nonfiction

He is the author of thirty law review articles in the fields of trusts & estates and taxation.[11]

Fiction

His short story, “The Stock Tip,” was published in the World’s Greatest Anthology, published by Celenic Earth Publications.[12] The project was part of an attempt to set a Guinness World Record as the largest published anthology.[13] His debut novel, *After the Fact*, was published by Red Adept Publishing on November 9, 2021.[14] The novel, written under the title *Ghosts of Harvard*, was a finalist for the Daphne Du Maurier Award for Excellence in Mystery/Suspense.[15]

2016 Presidential Campaign

In 2016, he registered as a write-in candidate for President of the United States.[16] His campaign generated significant local media attention.[17] He and his running mate, a martial artist, came in 7th place among Connecticut voters.[18]
