Jeffrey Prang is an American politician currently serving as the 27th Assessor for the County of Los Angeles. He previously served as City Council member for the City of West Hollywood, California, including four terms as Mayor.
Early Life and Education[edit]
Born in Detroit and raised in Warren, Michigan, Prang is the son of Donald J. Prang and Rita Imogene "Gene" Thompson. He graduated from C.S. Mott High School in 1980 and completed his Bachelor of Arts degree in International Relations in 1984 from the James Madison College at Michigan State University.[1][2]
In 2004, he completed the Program for Senior Executives in State and Local Government at the JFK School of Government at Harvard.
Public Service[edit]
Prang began his career as a Realtor with Re/Max Realty in Warren, Michigan before relocating to California in 1987.
Prior to his election to the West Hollywood City Council in March 1997 he served first as an aide to the - Los Angeles County Assessor Kenneth P. Han[3] and later to Los Angeles Council member Ruth Galanter. In 1994 he was appointed to the West Hollywood Rent Stabilization Commission.[4]
Prang served on the West Hollywood City Council from 1997-2024[5] and was selected to serve as Mayor in 2000, 2003, 2008 and 2012.[6]
First elected in 2014 as the 27th Los Angeles County Assessor, he was re-elected in 2018 and in 2022.
In addition to elective office, Prang also served on several boards and commissions, including the Santa Monica Bay Restoration Commission, Los Angeles County Library Commission, People Assisting the Homeless (PATH), and as President of the California Contract Cities Association (CCCA)[7] from 2006-2007. He was elected in 2023 as President-elect of the California Assessor's Association.[8]
