Jeffrey Sussman
Jeffrey Sussman is president of Jeffrey Sussman, Inc. a marketing public relations firm in New York City.[1] Jeffrey Sussman is the author of seventeen non-fiction books, two novels, dozens of short stories, book reviews, and numerous articles many of which are about boxing. Sussman is a frequent guest on boxing programs, such as Ringside Boxing Show and Friday night at the fights..[2] He formerly taught marketing and promotion courses at the New School for Social Research in New York City.
Early life[edit]
Sussman was born in New York City. His father was a garment manufacturer, and his mother was a public relations official for the State of New York and then a fund raiser for major Jewish organizations.
Sussman is a graduate of New York University, where he majored in English and minored in film and education.
In 1964, he married Susan Hirschland, who subsequently took the name of her mother Bonnie Prudden[3], a physical fitness expert. Suzy Prudden specialized in infant and toddler exercise programs.[4]. She and Jeffrey Sussman co-wrote seven health and fitness books as well as two television programs.[5] They operated a fitness and gymnastics studio in New York City from 1966 to 1981 and a sports camp in Bridgehampton, New York from 1970 to 1976. [6] Jeffrey and Suzy Sussman divorced in 1981. They have one son.
Career[edit]
From 1966 to 1969, while a college student, Sussman worked part-time as a secretary to Nobel Prize–winning author Isaac Bashevis Singer.[7]
In 1976, Sussman worked for Edelman International in public relations.[8]
From 1981 to 1982, he was press secretary for Henry Stern, city councilman-at-large for New York City.[9] Sussman was quoted in Mr. Stern's obituary in the New York Times in March 2019, stating "Mr. Stern had arranged to have a site in Central Park near 72nd Street named Strawberry Fields, after the Beatles song, in honor of John Lennon after he was murdered outside his home at the nearby Dakota apartment building in 1980. Mr. Stern, he said, also created a consumer truth-in-dying regulation for the city’s funeral home industry and a regulation to protect carriage horses." [10] In 1982, Sussman joined the marketing/PR firm of Zachary & Front, where he handled the Neighborhood Cleaners Association, several large law firms, and numerous food companies.
From 1988 to the present, Sussman has operated the marketing/PR company, Jeffrey Sussman Inc. For twelve years, he taught a marketing/PR course at The New School University in Manhattan. He has lectured at the YMHA as well as for the United States Department of State to companies that want to open businesses in the U. S. In 2009 he published No Mere Bagatelle, the official biography of Judith Leiber and Gerson Leiber[11]
In addition to the seven health and fitness books he wrote with his former wife, Sussman is the author of nine other non-fiction books: 1). How To Sleep Without Drugs. 2). Power Promoting: How to Market Your Business to the Top! 3). No Mere Bagatelles, the official biography of Judith Leiber. 4). Max Baer and Barney Ross: Jewish Heroes of Boxing; 5). Rocky Graziano: Fists, Fame, and Fortune.[12] 6). Boxing and the Mob: The Notorious History of the Sweet Science.(2019). Paul Davis of The Washington Times said "Boxing and the Mob” is an interesting and insightful book that chronicles the dramatic and colorful stories of mobsters and boxers." [13]. Publishers Weekly also gave a favorable review of "Boxing and the Mob," stating, "Sussman’s bold, probing excursion into boxing has the knockout power of a good punch". [14] 7). Big Apple Gangsters: The Rise and Decline of the Mob in New York; Publishers Weekly wrote, "The introduction alone is worth the price of admission. This is perfect for Godfather fans." 8). Holocaust Fighters: Boxers Resisters and Avengers. 9). Sin City Gangsters: The Rise and Decline of the Mob in Las Vegas. Booklist wrote: "Fans of Sussman’s previous city-focused histories will welcome this outing, but even those without mob connections will be implicated in enjoying this book."
