Jehad Abed is a Jordanian-Canadian materials scientist and researcher working at the intersection of artificial intelligence, experimental materials science, and clean energy technology.[1] His research focuses on accelerating the discovery and scalable synthesis of novel materials — particularly electrocatalysts — using autonomous laboratories, machine learning, and high-throughput experimentation.
As of 2025, Abed is a postdoctoral researcher at Meta within the Fundamental AI Research (FAIR) team, where he works on data-driven catalyst discovery and experimental validation.[1]
Early life and education
Abed completed his Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Toronto, where he was awarded the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship.[2] His doctoral research focused on electrocatalysis, CO2 conversion, and materials discovery for clean-energy applications.
Abed holds a Master’s degree in Materials Science and Engineering from the Masdar Institute of Science & Technology.[1][3] During his time at Masdar Institute, he gained experience in cleanroom-based nanofabrication, thin-film deposition, nanomaterials synthesis, and advanced materials characterization using techniques such as electron microscopy (TEM, SEM) and atomic-scale probes (AFM, SNOM).[1]
Abed completed his undergraduate studies in Renewable Energy Engineering at the University of Sharjah.[4]
Career
University of Toronto
From 2020 to 2023, Abed served as Program Director of the Alliance for AI-Accelerated Materials Discovery (A3MD) at the University of Toronto, leading research efforts in high-throughput experimentation and data-driven catalyst development.[5]
Meta (FAIR)
In 2023, Abed joined Meta’s Fundamental AI Research (FAIR) team as a postdoctoral researcher, where he contributes to integrating experimental datasets with AI for catalyst discovery and materials synthesis.[1]
Carbon XPRIZE
Abed previously worked with CERT Systems on electrochemical CO2 conversion, contributing to a finalist entry in the NRG COSIA Carbon XPRIZE competition.[1]
