From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Jelenko M. Mihailović (Vrbica near Knjaževac, Serbia, 11 January 1869 - Belgrade, Serbia, Yugoslavia, 30 October 1956) is considered one of the founders of seismology in Serbia. He is the founder of the Seismological Institute in Belgrade and an important popularizer of science at the time. He and Milan Nedeljković both worked together at the Belgrade Astronomical Society for more than a decade.[1]

Biography[edit]

Jelenko Mihailović was a student at the Grandes écoles in Belgrade from 1893 to 1906 and the closest associate and collaborator of Milan Nedeljković (1857-1950), the founder of the Belgrade Astronomical Observatory,[2] where Mihailović was the executor of macroseismic and microseismic work from 1904 on. In 1906, together with Svetolik Radovanović, Mihailović renewed and organized the seismological service at the Serbian Geological Society of the University of Belgrade, which the geologists' tasks were left to the observatory in 1901. Thanks to Mihailović, the Geological Society received a seismological station in Tašmajdan Park, which in 1910 grew into the Seismological Society, of which Mihailović was the manager from 1919 until his death in 1956. After graduating, he studied at the universities of Strasbourg, Paris and Berlin.[3] He worked on the formation of the seismological service of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, and as a representative of Serbia, he had all the rights of an official delegate in the International Association of Seismology and Physics of the Earth's Interior when it was being formed in 1922. He was a member of the Italian Seismological Society, the German Geophysical Society and a member of the Spanish Astronomical Society. From 1906 to 1939 he lectured on the course of seismology at the Faculty of Philosophy in Belgrade. From 1923 to 1941, he taught meteorology and climatology on a part-time basis at the Faculty of Agriculture in Belgrade. He became the rector of Belgrade's École supérieure de pédagogie in 1932. He published 195 scientific publications, several of which were textbooks, mostly in physics. As a scientist, he published his first papers in regional geology and paleontology and later devoted himself mostly to astronomy, climatology, mathematics, physics and seismology. For pedagogical and educational work, he was awarded the Order of Saint Sava, 3rd and 4th degree; for merits in the wars of 1912–1918 with a Commemorative Medal of the Great Serbian Retreat and a silver order; and for scientific work -- a diploma of the Serbian Geological Society.

Legacy[edit]

The Serbian state issued a commemorative stamp in his honour in 2019.[4]
