Jennifer Wyness is a Canadian politician who is serving as the councillor for Ward 2 of the Calgary City Council for her second term. She ran to be City Councillor for Calgary Ward 2 in the 2021 Calgary Municipal Election held on October 18th 2021, and was sworn into office on October 25th 2021.[1] Wyness was re-elected as City Councillor for Calgary Ward 2 in the 2025 Calgary municipal election for her second term.[2]
Wyness has represented the residential northwest communities of Ambleton, Arbour Lake, Citadel, Evanston, Glacier Ridge, Hamptons, Hawkwood, Kincora, Nolan Hill, Ranchlands, Sage Hill, Sherwood, and Symons Valley Ranch since October 2021.[3]
Early life and career
Wyness grew up in the Lower Mainland of British Colombia before moving to Calgary, having studied Bachelors of Kinesiology with a minor in Sociology from the University of the Fraser Valley, a Diploma of Public Relations from the University of Victoria, and an Emergency Medical Responder Certificate from the Justice Institute of British Columbia.[4] Prior to politics, Wyness worked in public relations and mediation for corporations, non-profits and governments alike. She also managed public recreation facilities for almost 15 years.
Electoral Record
Wyness first ran for Calgary City Council in 2017, finishing second behind the incumbent, Joe Magliocca, who won with 11,831 votes to her 8,677.[2] Later, Wyness was the Progressive Tory Party of Alberta (then Alberta Party) candidate in the 2019 Alberta general election.[5]
2021 municipal election
Wyness was elected to serve Ward 2 in the 2021 Calgary Municipal Election with 12,616 votes of the 26,233 total. Wyness beat incumbent Joe Magliocca who was first elected in 2013, but only secured 2,701 votes in the 2021 election following and expenses scandal.[6]
2025 municipal election
Wyness was elected to serve Ward 2 in the 2025 Calgary Municipal Election with 8,872 votes of the 22,604 total.[2]
Political career
Since her election in 2021, Wyness has sat on a number of committees. She is currently Chair of Audit Committee, the city councillor for the Calgary Police Commission (CPC), and is a member of the Calgary Police Commission Anti-Racism Subcommittee, Calgary Police Commission Governance Subcommittee, Infrastructure and Planning Committee, Executive Committee, Council Services Committee. At the Regular Meeting of Council on May 26th 2026, Wyness was also one of four Councillors to be appointed to the Chief Administrative Officer Recruitment Subcommittee.[7]
In the past Wyness has served on the following committees: Alberta Municipalities, Alberta Municipalities Infrastructure Subcommittee, Community Development Committee , Community Safety Investments Joint-Funding Partnership Working Group, Emergency Management Committee, Friends of HMCS Calgary Committee, City Manager Performance Evaluation Working Group.
Calgary Fire Advocacy
Many of Wyness’ notable motions in council, have related to advocacy for The Calgary Fire Department.
In March 2022, Councillor Wyness, cosigned by Sonya Sharp, Jasmine Mian and Dan Maclean, brought forth a Notice of Motion (11.4.10) regarding the 2023-2026 Service Plans and Budgets for the Calgary Fire Department that was passed 12-2.[8] This motion requested a report be made outlining the risks facing the Calgary Fire Department along with an analysis of the mitigation strategies that we in place.[9]
In April 2024, months of collaboration between Wyness and The Calgary Fire Department, advocating to The Government of Alberta, cumulated in a yearlong pilot for activating blue lights on fire trucks when parked to increase awareness of first responders on the road.[10]
On May 26th 2026, Calgary City Council voted unanimously in support of Wyness’ Notice of Motion calling for the establishment of a Fire and Protective Services Committee within Council, providing Calgary Fire with direct over-sight and communication with Council.[11] [12]
Graphic Flyers Bylaw
On November 1st 2022, Councillor Wyness’ Notice of Motion: “Regulating the Distribution of Graphic Images in Calgary Communities” was unanimously passed in the Regular Meeting of Council.[13] This Notice of motion resulted in a bylaw that any printed material representing a fetus in any manner, must be concealed in an opaque envelope, have a graphic content warning, and include the name and address of the sender.[14]
Community Policy
On April 25th 2025, Wyness’s Notice of Motion 9.4.6 “Adequately Funding the Ward Community Event Fund” passed 10-3 at the Regular Meeting of Council.[15] This motion increased the Ward Community Event Fund (WCEF) from $10,000 per ward per year, to $47,205 per ward per year, with the direction that the WCEF allocation for the 2026-2029 budget be $50,000 per ward, per annum.
Other notable contributions to Wyness’ community throughout her political career include the working with the city to create the City of Calgary’s Capital Projects Website, securing $500,000 in funding for Symons Valley Park and securing funding for Symons Valley Library.[16]
