Jenny Jinya (born June 7 in Germany; real name Jenny Hefczyc) is a German comic artist, illustrator, and animal rights activist. She gained international recognition primarily through her webcomic series Loving Reaper.

Biography and education

Hefczyc began her artistic career at the Berlin Technical Art School (BTK), Academy of Design, in Berlin, where she studied communication design. In 2013, she graduated with a diploma degree in communication design. During her studies, in 2012, she won the Animexx e.V. drawing contest for the Manga Mixx #9 anthology series.[1]

Starting in 2016, she studied Digital Media at the HAWK University of Applied Sciences and Arts Hildesheim/Holzminden/Göttingen and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree. During her studies, she was awarded the Lower Saxony State Scholarship. Through a PROMOS scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), she also completed a semester abroad in animation and game design at Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne, Australia.

Career

The creation of Loving Reaper can be traced back to a single comic page that Hefczyc posted on Twitter (now X) in the fall of 2019. The story, about a grim reaper accompanying a deceased animal, went viral on social media and garnered significant international attention.[2] Due to the overwhelming response, she expanded the concept into an ongoing series, which she has since been posting on Instagram,[3] Webtoon,[4] and Facebook.[5]

For her webcomic series Loving Reaper, she was honored in 2021 with the WEBTOON CANVAS Award in the "Outstanding Drama" category.[6]

Following its online success, the first print edition of Loving Reaper was published in 2020 by Machandel Verlag. Subsequently, translated hardcover editions were published by the Belgian publisher Livr’S Editions (in French and English) as well as by other publishers in South Korea and Brazil (Editora Excelsior/Editora Inside Books). For German-speaking countries, Panini Comics ultimately took over the publication of the book series. In addition, in 2021 she contributed as an artist to the international anthology project The Most Important Comic Book on Earth: Stories to Save the World, which was published by DK Publishing in collaboration with the Jane Goodall Institute. Following the release of The Most Important Comic Book on Earth, one of her short comics was broadcast in its entirety on live television as part of a report by the British television network BBC.[7]

In 2023, Jenny was nominated for the U.S. Ringo Award in the "Best Cartoonist (Writer/Artist)" category for her work on Loving Reaper.[8]

In 2024, her webcomic series Loving Reaper was published under the title "다정한 사신" (The Kind Reaper) on the South Korean market.[9] In an interview with the South Korean daily newspaper Hankook Ilbo, Hefczyc stated that the Korean edition was expanded to include special chapters addressing local animal welfare issues such as bear bile farms and chained dogs. She emphasized her motivation to give a voice to abused and lonely animals and to contribute to greater compassion in society through her work.

German trade publications, such as the comic magazine ALFONS in 2025, also reported on Hefczyc's artistic work and her success.[10]

To produce an animated short film adaptation of Loving Reaper, Hefczyc launched a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter in collaboration with an animation studio. The funding goal was successfully exceeded by 128%.[11]
