Jens Albrecht III

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Jens Albrecht III is a German passenger ship operating from Harlesiel on the East Frisian coast. Built in 1935 at the Meyer yard in Papenburg, the vessel is one of the older surviving passenger ships used in traffic to and around the East Frisian Islands. It is owned by AG Reederei Norden-Frisia and operated by DB Fernverkehr through SIW Schifffahrt und Inselbahn Wangerooge for excursion sailings and selected day-trip services connected with Wangerooge.[1][2]

History

The ship was built in 1935 by Jos. L. Meyer GmbH & Co. in Papenburg as Baltrum II for Baltrum Linie GmbH & Co. KG of Baltrum.[1] In 1958 it passed to Nordseebad Spiekeroog GmbH and was renamed Spiekeroog II.[1]

On 29 November 1984, the vessel entered service under the name Jens Albrecht III with Harlesiel-based owner Inge Albrecht.[1] Since 1 November 2006 it has been listed by Mark Prummel's ship database under the ownership of AG Reederei Norden-Frisia, with DB Fernverkehr AG as commercial manager.[1]

The vessel remains in active service. In March 2026, for example, it underwent repair and maintenance work at Schiffswerft Diedrich in Oldersum, including conservation work, inspection of the propeller, shafting and rudder, and a DNV survey.[3]

Service

According to SIW Schifffahrt und Inselbahn Wangerooge, Jens Albrecht III serves primarily as the operator's excursion vessel for trips to the seal banks (Seehundbänke).[2] The operator also states that the ship is used for day trips from Harlesiel to Wangerooge, with departures handled from the west side of Harlesiel harbour.[2]

SIW advertises excursion cruises aboard the vessel from Harlesiel and notes onboard catering by kiosk service.[4] Because of its size and layout, the vessel is only conditionally suitable for passengers with reduced mobility, and certain bulky items such as bicycle trailers and handcarts are not carried on board.[4]

Design and characteristics

Jens Albrecht III has a gross tonnage of 118.[1][5] The ship is 26.48 m (86 ft 11 in) long overall, with a beam of 5.80 m (19 ft 0 in), a depth of 1.75 m (5 ft 9 in), and a draft of 1.23 m (4 ft 0 in).[1][5]

Propulsion is provided by a single MAN D2530ME diesel engine rated at 165 kW, driving a single propeller.[1] The service speed is given as 11.5 knots, and the vessel is listed with accommodation for 120 passengers.[1]

Mark Prummel's ship database lists the vessel with a deadweight of 24 tons.[1]

Incidents

On 20 May 1997, Jens Albrecht III was involved in a collision with the Wangerooge ferry Harlingerland in sudden fog while on the route between Wangerooge and Harlesiel. According to Mark Prummel's ship history summary, 14 passengers were injured, some seriously, and Jens Albrecht III was seriously damaged, while Harlingerland suffered minor bow damage. The same source states that both captains were found guilty.[1]
