The Jericho Sailing Centre (JSCA) is a non-profit community watersports facility located on the shores of English Bay in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. It provides public access to sailing, paddling, windsurfing, and other non-motorized watercraft, and is home to multiple clubs, schools, and community groups.
History
The centre occupies the former Jericho Beach air station, a Royal Canadian Air Force seaplane base active during the Second World War. After the base was decommissioned, the site was repurposed in the 1970s into a community sailing facility to improve public waterfront access. The Jericho Sailing Centre Association (JSCA) was formally incorporated in 1974 to manage the site.
Facilities
The Jericho Sailing Centre includes boat storage, classrooms, changerooms, and launch ramps for dinghies, catamarans, canoes, kayaks, and windsurfers. The compound also contains a licensed café overlooking English Bay, meeting spaces, and offices for resident clubs and schools.
Clubs and Schools
JSCA hosts a wide range of sailing and paddling organizations, including both community clubs and commercial schools:
Sailing and paddling schools
- MacSailing, the largest sailing school in Canada, offering youth camps, adult lessons, rentals, and a race team.
- Windsure Adventure Watersports, specializing in windsurfing, stand-up paddleboarding, and skimboarding lessons.
- Jericho Beach Kayak, offering kayak and paddleboard rentals, lessons, and guided tours.
Community clubs
- Club Locarno, a volunteer-run club with fleets of sailboats, windsurfers, kayaks, and stand-up paddleboards.
- UBC Sailing Club, one of the largest student-run clubs in Canada, offering sailing, windsurfing, and paddle sports to students, staff, and alumni.
- Viking Sailing Club, a cooperative club with fleets of dinghies and cruising sailboats.
- Companionway Sailing Club, focused on cruising and keelboat sailing.
Events and Regattas
The Jericho Sailing Centre regularly hosts community sailing and paddling events, including local dinghy regattas, collegiate sailing competitions, and the long-running Jericho Wavechaser paddling race series. It has also hosted national-level competitions such as the Canadian ILCA Masters Championship. In addition, the centre serves as a venue for training programs, open houses, and safety workshops.
Community Role
The centre is notable for its non-profit governance structure, which emphasizes affordable public access to Vancouver’s waterfront. It plays a central role in the city’s recreational sailing and paddling culture and is widely recognized as one of the most active community watersports facilities in Canada.
