Jessica Corr is an American Industrial Designer and a professor at Parsons School of Design in New York City.[1][2]

Career[edit]

After graduating from Parsons in 1990s, Corr began her design career by working in a variety of projects and design media including product and lighting design, retail, exhibition and set design (in collaboration with Robert Wilson) in New York City.[3][4] Her work came to prominence in 2000 when she founded an experimental design laboratory named Collaborative.[5][6] Her work for Collaborative was exhibited at Cooper-Hewitt’s National Design Triennial in New York, Salone del Mobile in Milan.[7][8] The interdisciplinary structure of Collaborative as a collective (compromised of artists, and designers of various fields) as well as the speculative nature of the work was also noted and catalogued by design galleries and publications Surface, ID, and Graphis.[9][10]

Since early 2000s, Corr's design practice has focused on creating furniture, lighting, and accessories for hospitality applications.[11] Her body of work is shaped by exploration of emerging materials or re-contextualization of more traditional materials through new applications and fabrication methodologies. [12][13]

Academia and activism[edit]

Her academic work has followed a similar pattern to her design practice in its focus on cross-disciplinary methodologies.[14] Her most notable course at Parsons has been in collaboration with Ketty Maisonrouge professor at Columbia Business School in which multidisciplinary teams of Parsons design students working alongside their Columbia MBA counterparts to create innovative strategies in response to briefs by established luxury brands.[15][16][17]

Her interest in sustainable design and environmental activism has seen her lead collaborations between Parsons with Parley for the Ocean and DSNY, as well as a campaign to eliminate styrofoam trays from New York city public schools.[18][19]
